Would you guys recommend trying to do all liquid diet LONG before surgery? Ideas?

Recommended Posts

So as many of you already know I'm looking into getting the lap band surgery early next year. I've been researching constantly. They say you can never research too much. hehe.. Anywho.. I was just wondering.......

Would you guys recommend me trying to do a liquid/mushy liquid diet for a week or two? I just want to see what it's like and test the waters. I know that post surgery my stomach is obviously going to be a lot smaller so I won't have the hunger pains, but I know that before surgery most docs have you have a liquid diet like 10 days prior to surgery.

If you guys DO recommend me doing this, what do you suggest I do as far as what types of liquids and whatnot?

I mean as far as Protein shakes what do you suggest?? I don't know much or anything at all about Protein Shakes. i would want something easy on the go that i can have at work. any suggestions?

Any other suggestions for other liquid/mushy liquid foods???

If you have any links to sites that would also be appreciated..:whatchutalkingabout

Any just another quick question.. say lose a bunch of weight with this liquid diet?? Would it be a bad idea before even doing the whole process of having a consult with a surgeon and all. Would i jeopordize my qualifacations for the surgery??? My BMI is 41.6

Personally and only PERSONALLY I don't feel you should try a liquid diet before you have to. This is my reason. It is much, much different when you have to verse just because. My pre-diet was 14 days of Protein Shakes and liquids. I promise you the fact that surgery was at the end of this diet was the only thing that keep me going, I had a goal and I knew if I did not do what I HAD to do I would not reach my goal.

No, you should not do a liquid diet. I didn't need to do a preop liquid diet at all and my BMI was 41. the post op diet was so easy to follow because I had sooo much restriction from surgery.

I have done liquid diets in the past and they are wicked. They are hard to follow and for me usually results in huge binges and weight gain instead of loss.

Have you met with your sugeon yet? If not, I would not try to lose weight untill you see him. Qualify for surgery and then if you want, try a liquid diet. You can always cancel the surgery once you qualify, but it is alot harder to qualify for surgery if your BMI drops below 40.

Honestly, I wouldnt bother. After surgery is SO different to before, well it was for me. I wasnt hungry at all and found the liquid diet absolutely easy, was never even remotely tempted to cheat. I know everyone doesnt find it quite so easy but I think its safe to say it will be WAY harder without the benefit of surgery and the fear of messing up your surgery.

Why put yourself through it? Use the pre op period to start an exercise program and practice healthy eating so that you're healthy and strong for quick recovery! That's a doable, positive step.

my dr. told me to go on a liquid diet 2 weeks before surgury because it helps shrink the fat on the liver. The less fat on the liver or surounding area means less chance of any other issues. At least that is what i was told

I don't think you should do the liquid diet. I do agree that it can help with your stomach size but if u are doin the surgery next year, that is like 5 months.

If u can keep up a liquid diet for that long im not sure if surgery is your last resort. However if you try it anyways and fail as most of us do then go into the horrible "lose weight then gain it back plus more" it would all be for nothing. My advice... don't do it until instructed to do so.

I wouldn't do it...it was hard enough when you have to do it. I think that you would be setting yourself up for failure. Just my opinion.

Thank you!! I won't do the liquid diet until AFTER I meet with the surgeon and he says it's ok. Thank you guys for your input. I really appreciate it.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
