Office staff may not be helping you!

Recommended Posts

OK, I have been trying to get approved since March. Finished my 6 month supervised diet and everything then. Well the insurance coordinator at the surgeons office called the insurance and found out there was and exclusion on my policy, to make a very long story short I was getting the run around from the office staff and finally in at the end of June they just got tired of me calling and said you can only proceed as a cash patient call back when you have the money, basically.

I got the financing ready to pay cash, have final consult with surgeon, he said why were you denied? I said I wasn't your staff never sumitted it to the insuance due to an exclusion, he and I go to the insurance coordinator that works for him and he said with all this stuff, she has many co-morbities submit it to her insurance before she pays cash and see what they say, I will do a peer to peer if necessary. She then tells him "there is an exclusion..." he says "submit it any way all they can say is no.." she is again hesitant and he sternly says "SUBMIT IT TODAY". This was three weeks ago Tuesday, she calls me the next day and says its all ready to go, I'm mailing it in because you have alot of records (I think" I know I got them all and brought them to you because you wouldn't request them").

Fast forward three weeks till today, cannot be patient any longer, I call my insurance to see what decision they had made. They say we don't have anything on you, haven't seen anything. I then call the coordinator, tell her the insurance hasn't seen my pre authorization claim yet, she tells me oh I'm sorry, I haven't gotten around to sending it in yet, I'll do it today. I about came unstuck. When do you cease being nice, I really really like the surgeon and I don't want to go to anyone else, but I am having a very hard time with everyone else in his office, and the most frustrating part is I have the cash but if I don't have to pay out $17,000 on the off chance that my insurance will pay for it I can't help but try!!! And after my consult with him I don't think he has a clue as to what his staff is up to!

Thanks for letting me vent, I'm about to the end of my rope and getting ready to say forget it.

You might have to find another Dr. He obviously is not in control of his staff. That won't change if he did your surgery. My Dr. only employs nurses and staff that have had the surgery. They all understand the issues that we are facing.

Keep your chin up and find a Dr. who will take you seriously. Many Drs. are in this business because they want to make differences in peoples lives. He must not because of who he employs.

My band has enabled so many wonderful changes to happen. I am in control of my life again!!!

Good luck!

Girl! There is a time when enough is enough! Since the doctor already approached his staff and demanded to try, its says he has your best interest at heart. However, the lazy coordinator is a slacker. I would go straight to the doctor. I would write down each time you had to do research, call the insurance, and also include his visit the date, etc. and then let him know that she "forgot" to submit the paper work. She seems like a bitch.. excuse my language.. LOL... But if I was there I would go do it for you.

OMG what a headache for you! Makes me so grateful to be an Australian where we have a national health system who will pick up some when the Private health providers finish (no evaluations needed) Then through our tax system I can claim back any out of pocket expense over $1500 that includes pharmacuetical, optical, dental, pathology etc etc. My GP gave me a referral to WLS doctor and I went for consultation, he told me that it would cost approx $7000 all of which is claimable one way or another and asked then I'd like the op. I could have had it 2 weeks later if I chose, but to fit in with my job it suited me to wait till my break was due. All follow up appoinments for check-ups or fills are of no extra expense as the government health system covers it.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR EFFORTS. Dob the staff member in and hopefully the doc will throw the book at her.

This sounds JUST like what happened to me. Then when she did submit the paperwork she only sent in half of it! Well of course I was denied. I just got all my stuff together with a letter and faxed 25 more pages of records that for some reason she failed to send. I am doing all the leg work as of now. If it were not for the fact that I like my surgeon I would have gone postal on the "surgery coordinator" already. Sometimes it is best to be your own advocate, seems in toadys world you have to. I too have had to bite my tongue, but in the end, she will know I how feel!! Good luck to you! Tamara

I am going to contact the doctor, he was wonderful. I didn't want to be a tattle tale on his staff and seem like a whiner but he did look at me a little funny when I handed him a folder an inch thick with records so I kinda eluded to the fact that I was getting the run around. But this is the last straw. I'm going to throw them under the bus this time if I were the surgeon I would like to know how my patients were being treated. I just wonder how many other people have gone to other surgeons because they don't want to work on the cases that might be out of the ordinary.

The surgeon is in Las Vegas, Nevada. Thanks for all your support, I'm not nearly as mad as I was yesterday, I didn't even break out the Cookies.

Good for you!! Don't let her get to you. You should not have to lose your surgeon because of an employee who's out to prove something. I worked for surgeons and I will tell you if one their employees did that they would have been let go. One for patient treatment and two because she's actually taking money away from the practice if you chose to go somewhere else.

I bet he rips her a good one once he finds out the latest because I know he has not been updated.

Also, if you do not already have one I would obtain a copy of all of your documents. Since what has been mentioned here before. If they deny you because of missing documents you will have a copy to send to them without having to deal with that woman.

I made copies of everything, I had a friend of mine get the surgery at this same office a couple of years ago and she warned me about how this staff has a tendancy to "lose or misplace" records. This office is very busy, and 90% of their business is easy insurance approval. I really don't think any of them in that "patient advocate" part of the office wants to put any effort into something that might require a little extra time an energy on their part, I think they have become way to complacent and really don't care if the patients go someplace else, I'm sure the surgeon doesn't know, though he is about to...:wink2: I have made an appointment with him on Friday the 8th

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
