Can erosion be diagnosed with barium swallow?

Recommended Posts

My guess would be that if you have erosion and there is a hole in your stomach than the barium would flow through the hole to the outside of your stomach...Does anyone know if this is true?

You can have erosion without having total penetration through the stomach wall. Those would be diagnosed by visualization via a epigastric scope. A CT scan should definitely see a perforated stomach with contrast.

Kelly, they can "detect" erosion in a barium swallow, but you need an endscopy to confirm the diagnosis. You're right, if there's erosion, the barium will flow around the outside of the band instead of through it, which is seen under x-ray. Once the doctor detects it during the barium swallow, he won't give you a fill but instead will schedule the endo.

This goes back to the old debate of getting fills with fluro vs. non-fluoro. An occasional non-flouro fill is fine as long as you get your band looked at under x-ray from time to time.

With a barium swallow in regards to erosion the barium will flow over the band and not through it is what I was told by my Dr.

Yeah, Kelly, a fluoroscopy is the first diagnostic test that would be done. Erosion can be detected that way depending on the degree. I don't know if it can be ruled out that way, though, so if there are symptoms of concern it might be a good idea to have an endoscopy anyway.

Please tell me you're not asking for yourself? Is everything OK?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
