How much weight can us guys expect to lose

Recommended Posts

As I am quite aware, men's bodies are different from womens'. I read about expected results, percentiles and all that stuff but wonder if the numbers for us guys might be different. I started my two week pre-op diet 17 minutes ago and can't wait to get this all over with. But I wonder what I can truly expect to lose after this procedure. Any of you guys willing to share your results? I'm also curious what you think helps with your success.

Guys lose weight easier than women. Guys eat so much more than women. Women live 5.5 years longer then guys. Rules are different each Doctor & clinic. They are all based the same. Mine are measure out 4 ozs. food 3 times a day. Exercise & attend support meeting. If I was to do it again, I would demand Realize band. I'm finding out that it works better for guys. Get this book pre-op. Weight Loss Surgery with the Adjustable Gastric Band (at Borders). Main thing is getting your head in right place. Good Luck. Banded 1/15/08, by Dr. Soong & Dr. Atkinson. Lost over 122 pounds forever. Best day of my Life was losing morbid obesity handle. No fills. Losing it in Vegas! Hasta Pronto, George:thumbup:

Did you ever see the Realize band up close? To me it looks like something made in someone's garage. It doesn't look or feel as sturdy as the lap band. I personally never heard or read that it is better for men. It would be interesting to see this research though.

My appt. is today at SWCC. I weigh in once a week anyway, as clinic scales are only ones I consider accurate. I leave my questions the Fill nurses or Brian Grace. Dr. Soong gets my questions at meeting. I have called RealizemySuccess web site they could not give me numbers I wanted. Through LapbandTalk I found new sites & Dr. Curry of Cincinnatti,Ohio. He says several males he has, have gone as long as I without a fill with realizeband. I want to get Europen records as Realize has only been in U.S. 1&1/2 years. I pay close attention to failure of bands & Drs. I have not saw any with Realize.

I will to find out if Realize is the only band they put in men. I only found out which band I have 2 months ago. Would you ask Dr. Teng what his feeling are about Realize are? I have your sugery date marked down & the Best of luck to you. My baby sister has degrees like you in Health. She use to work for J&J. She had a by-pass surgery that went bad. She is all right now, but wishes she had a band. She is my in house expert! She came to Las Vegas to help me with my spine fusion surgery. She worked on a study with my Dr. He hurt his back installing hardware in mine. I use to be huge. Hasta Pronto, George:thumbup:

It depends

100+ pounds is possible if you stay active and focus more on your exercise and less on the amount of Fluid in the band. If you are a overweight computer nerd that loves food and movies and only goes out at night then you can expect about 50% weight lose from what you were hoping for.

If you are an ex athlete that has let their self go (thats me) after marriage and kids and a desk job then the weight will fly off. I lost 85 pounds playing basketball and volleyball and never stepped on a treadmill. My activity level has always been high but so was the calorie intake. Burn 3800 calories a day (bodybugg) and then eat 5000 calories.

Its not impossible to hit goal but it helps to have fun doing something active.

George,

I talked to Dr. Teng today and asked about the Realize. He said it's the French version of the band. Shaped more like a horseshoe than a complete innertube, he said that it doesn't have complete restriction like the American version because of that part in the back where there is no closure. He explains it like a Cadillac compared to a Mercedes. The Cadillac (Realize) is a good luxury car, but no comparison to the Mercedes for performance. I don't know if that is what you wanted to know, but that's what he said. He clearly prefers the American version. Bonnie

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
