Hi All. This is my first post, though I have been reading them for 3 weeks now. I am fervently researching but have at this time made up my mind to do the surgery. I am letting my pride go in order ot lead as healthy a life as possible. I am 5'5 and 240lbs and can't seem to get the weight off. I would also like a copy of the letter that you submitted to your insurance company(mine will be changing to UHC Choice Plus in January '09). Right now I have Fisev health and they do not cover it.

I really appreciate all the information. On my first submition of paperwork I am going to take advantage of all the advice and have mt PCP's letter, 5 year history of obesity, my BMI is 41, the pstch eval, and nutritionist vist(am I forgetting anything?) I feel like I am rambling. I will stop now.

Thanks for all the information.

:D

Acadiamom- Good for you. You bring up a good point. I know my employer also has a corporate advocate that I could have taken advantage of if I needed it. So for those of you that you know WLS is covered in your policy and you are still getting push back from the insurance company you may want to check and see if there is someone at your work that you can contact to keep things moving. Good luck on the 19th!

I have the same insurance as you it sounds like and i was approved in about 10 days. My bmi was 40 with no real co-morbidities. However i had gerd, arthritis in my right hip, and lower back pain. I had my dr type a letter for my insurance to go along with the surgeons letter saying that i was a good candidate for the surgery. I believe this helped alot. Good luck and DONT GIVE UP!! i was banded october 23rd and ive already lost 20 lbs!!

I also have UHC. I was well over 40 BMI and I had Type II diabetes and high blood pressure. My doctor sent in my records and I was approved in about two weeks. It seems crazy to me tat these insurance companies want us to get fatter before they will approve anything.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. My plans for surgery are on hold at the moment. I spoke to my nutritionsist and she wants me to wait a year and give her a chance to help me with the right diet and portion control; which I am more than willing to do. I will still confirm if my insurance will approve me when my insurance kicks over to UHCP in january.

You are doing great!! Congratulations!

Good luck with your new plan soon2be. I hope that she is able to work out a plan for you. I think you could do it and also have the band at the same time. I would not wait if you can get approved right-a-way. I agree work on it while getting approved but not to wait. I am so glad that I did it when I did and pleased with the results.

I work for AT&T and was turned down. I do have documented co mobities. I had four years BMI over 40 and one year 35.7.. They said flat you have to have all years over 40... I am appealing. Any info any one has would be greatly appreciated. KingsFan I would be interested in knowing if you are approved.. and if you had the five years BMI

Did they say that it had to be 5 years in a row or just 5 years. I had some odd dates and was approved. I can forward you the letter that I used to get approved 2 years ago. The wife had problems with her letter because of her on doctor and so we went to her OBGYN and he did the same letter and faxed it in and was approved. Not really sure what the problem was. Good luck and if you have any questions just ask.

They did not say it had to be five years in a row. It dawned on me last night that I could probably go back to prior years.. I would love to see the letter you used. My email is necholeheadley@gmail.com Anything you can send is greatly appreciated...

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
