i posted this in the general intro area before i found this group:

hi everyone. i'm new here. my husband and i are both considering the surgery. he has already started his pre-op testing and doesn't have a surgery date yet but hopefully soon. as far as me, i'm really torn.

we want to get pregnant and i'm at the point where if i were to get pregnant at my current weight i could be at risk for gestational diabetes as well as other things. besides my weight i'm pretty healthy, normal blood pressure and sugar.

my question is this? should i keep trying to lose this weight on my own while trying to get pregnant, or wait the 1 year post op to have our family. we really don't want to wait but not sure what we should do.

any thoughts?:confused2:

i think you should wait. who knows? something else besides the diabetes may go wrong because of your weight. (sorry! no offense) and you should get healthy before having the baby so all your attention can be on keeping you baby healthy and happy! besides-you want to teach your child a healthy lifestyle so why not get healthy before tha baby? hope this helps. good luck!

There is a lot to learn in the first year of being banded. (about yourself, the band, healthy living, stuffed emotions, etc.) Personally I would give yourself the time to process and then start the wild ride of pregnancy.

My surgeon requires a complete unfill when pregnant. If the same is true for your surgeon you might want to take that into consideration too.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I am very glad I had my band before I got pregnant. I really think it has been the key to a healthy pregnancy for me. I have gained about 15lbs (I'm 32 weeks now), and I'm sure I would've gained MUCH more than that if I didn't have my band. Sure, I wish I would've lost more weight before I got preggo, but I'm also a bit older than you and that was a big factor in how long I was going to wait.

thank you girls for your answers!!

we're waiting to see the result of this current cycle and if no BFP i'm going to go ahead with the pre-op testing and stop trying until i'm healthier. it's been a really hard decision, thank you for the support.

-juno your EDD is the day before my b-day, good luck!!

I had my first child before being banded and gained a LOT of weight after he was born. I'm so relieved now that I have the band to help me through the "new baby adjustment period" Midnight feedings used to be for both me and the baby. Not this time.

I decided to get banded before we got pregnant and it is working out very well.

I gained almost 70 pounds with my son and was scared to death of another 70 pounds on top of my current 225. I really wanted to have a healthy, enjoyable pregnancy and I feel that now I can. Also, it will be a lot more fun trying for a baby with a few less pounds holding me back. I also am looking forward to a cute little baby bump instead of people not being sure if I am pregnant or just heavy.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
