Hey everyone,

I know sodas aren't something that should be on a bandsters diet, and I don't intend to continue that habit after surgery.I am a total popaholic!Anyone else have that problem? How did you cope?

I am still waiting to be banded, but I have totally given up all pop. I quit cold turkey and to make up for the caffine I made a gallon of iced tea 1/2 caffinated and 1/2 Decaf tea bags and I am drinking that for the caffine. I tried to quit cold turkey when I got pregnant and I had really severe headaches, so this worked much better. I picked up my husbnads pop last night by accident and it was horrible, I have lost the taste for it all together~Mandy

I can sympathize...I was banded April 14th and before that was a diet coke-a-holic and I drank diet coke right up until surgery. Since surgery I just quit and started drinking crystal light and Decaf Iced tea....about a week ago I thought I could have a few sips of caff free diet coke....FLAT....and let me tell you it was nothing to write home about...didn't taste very good and gave me that real full burpy feeling, even flat...so that's all it took...no more for me...I'll tell you it didn't take long for the withdrawl from caffine went away...a few days...just find a replacement you really like...good luck to you...

I totally agree with Jack, give me 1/2 a can of diet anything and I have a Migraine for days. Same with most sugar free candies and such. If it can cause a migraine that bad or have a laxative (sp?) effect why would you want to consume it???? ~Mandy

I was banded April 29 and at 11:55 p.m. on April 28 I downed my last diet Dr. Pepper. It was like saying goodbye to an old friend but I did it! I drank from 6 to 8 cans a day of the stuff but since my surgery, not one single drop. It wasn't as bad as I thought either. I think it's just I finally have my mind set that I'm going to be successful and I ain't letting no 12 ounce can of diet Dr. Pepper stand in my way! I drink lots of Water and I love Crystal Lite now. A good cold glass of that hits the spot! I know it's not easy and I sometimes feel really sorry for people that have stock in Dr. Pepper cause since I gave it up the stock has to be falling but you can do it...I'm living proof. Good luck!

I gave them up the day before surgery (I had to do clear liquids). I wasn't just a pop fan -- I had at least 2 20 ounce bottles of regular PEPSI every day before surgery. Gave em up cold turkey. Had no problems. Or maybe I had problems but since I was still on pain killers from surgery, didn't notice them.

I also drank 6-8 cans of diet coke. I decreased my intake before surgery until I was at one can a day. Then the day before surgery I had that last can and knew I had to change my life. It was not going to stand in my way, so I drink Crystal Lite, Diet peach tea in the gallon jug and Water. The water is very hard for me but I find if it is always setting beside me I drink it all day.

The odd thing I have noticed is that my problem with incontenince has almost disapeared. I think it had to do with carbonated drinks! I have not lost much weight so it can't be that. I have had trouble with it for about 4 years. So it has been worth it.

I feel for you so :) I am in the same boat. I love diet Coke. It took me 2 days of cold turkey and to tell you the truth it's as hard as giving up food, to give up your cafeine.

Just say that you will not buy anymore. Once it's all gone...it's gone...Be strong...

What I craved most after surgery wasn't food, it was an icy cold coca-cola. I craved it for a week or two and now nothing. 3 weeks banded, and I'm good. Although, when friends drink soda in front of me, it's a little tough. But, I love lemonade and most places serve lite lemonade. Also, I make Crystal lite at home in a fancy glass pitcher with ice and I cut up lemons and put them in. It's yummy. I do the same with Water. It's like being at a restaurant! I love it!

Hi... just wanted to put my 2 cents in here.... I was banded on April 6th, 2005...

I recently had lunch out with my husband.. he always orders diet coke and I always get water... well... for some strange reason I picked up his diet coke and took a sip.. just a sip.. and boy was I sorry... I will never do that again... believe me you won't miss the soda if you experiance that feeling just once...

I was banded on May 2nd and all I drank for years was seltzer. I was sure that I'd never make it without drinking seltzer but I don't miss it at all. It's weird how things change.

I am diabetic and was always thirsty and seltzer quenched my thirst. I even drank it during the night. My blood sugar is now almost normal and I drink Water and an occasional cup of tea or coffee and that's about it.

You'll be fine!!

I started out drinking crystle lite! I use to mix my own and bottle it , and keep it in the fridge, I was a total Diet Coke addict , THen I went threw a coffee stage, two years later and -220# I can now atleast drink a diet coke if I choose, but have to be carefull and drink it slow and it has to be ice cold. regular Water gags me and then I end up getting sick!

hehehhe the band is a strange thing Heather! you will find sometimes you will be able to eat , drink and be marry....then down the road, bang! your band is tighter, or your stomache is staying fuller, and you can't drink pop, it just depends a lot of things. the last month I have not been able to drink diet coke, I had to switch over to clear pop! can I excplain this ?? nope! and i use to be able to drink coffee, right now I can't, and my band is almost empty! heheheh

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
