Considering ps - when is the right time

Recommended Posts

I have about 10 more pounds to go. How long after I reach my goal should I wait before getting plastic surgery? I am thinking about a TT and a breast reduction. Can those be done at the same time? Any suggestions about surgeons in the Washington, DC area?

From what I've read on here it seems like NOW would be a perfect time for a consult. I'm on the opposite coast but if I was anywhere in the NYC area I'd definitely schedule a visit with Dr. Schulman. His photos show wonderful results and he has been a God send of information.

Best of luck with your journey and yes, I believe both of those procedures can be done at the same time, in most instances.

Goldie,

i agree now would be a good time to at least start the consult process... even if you LOVE the first surgeon, i suggest going to see at least 2.

good luck and congrats on your weight loss!

Hi goldie, I'm not sure about the timing, but many plastic surgeons offer free consultations and would be able to give you an idea. I've heard that you're supposed to wait about a year after your weight has stabilized.

I've heard of a doctor in the Richmond, VA area (I know that's not exactly DC), but he has minimally invasive body lift/contouring procedures that offer much quicker recovery time, less scarring and I think they are less expensive. As you begin to meet with doctors, it may be worth making the trip to meet with him. Here is a link to his website:

Dr Bermant's Background and CV Plastic surgery, aesthetic, and cosmetic surgery

I live in the Kansas City area and I'm hoping to find someone who does the same type of procedures closer to home.

I have heard some doctors recommend checking into ps when you are 10 lb short of your goal, because you may have that 10 in extra skin that surgery will remove.

Slimmy many people still have overly large breasts after weight loss, if nature dictates that is what their shape is.

I have that empty top bit too, I was large breasted but am not now, I'm still a D but on my five foot ten frame, that's not really big. I've had some initial consults about my boobs, which are very saggy and completely flat on top. I've had two main pieces of advice. First is that yes, a breast lift is what you need, we can fix all that but the other guy said no, you have too much loose empty skin on the tops of your breasts and will get a better result with an implant as well as a lift.

Not sure. I like not having big boobs. I dont want big boobs. But if I can get an implant that will fill out that top portion but not make me noticeably bigger I will.

To the OP, I'd say now is a great time to start looking for a surgeon.

I am with you just want to have more shape on top, will go and get 2 opinions, the guy who did my lapband does not do breasts, but he said i would need implants to give shape uptop. I am a size 10d,but i am 5ft 4, now weigh 59kilos. So I will sus around and see who can be recommended in Perth.

I went to my consult when I was 25 pounds from goal. I am having a TT next week, currently I am 9 pounds away from goal, hopefully I will be 7 away on the surgery day, and they will cut 5 pounds off. Voila......I will be 2 pounds away from goal.

I looked into a breast lift, got the quote, but decided to wait on the breast lift. I am thinking I may need a facelift to deal with my now droopy jowls. Doc recommended doing boobs and facial surgery together. I may wait until this time next year for that round of surgery.

Congrats on being almost at goal. Good luck with your Plastic Surgeon research

Re Timing:

Even if you are in doubt as to the timing, it's a good idea to do your consultations and let the Dr. advise you accordingly.

I started consulting with Dr.'s long before I thought I was ready -- when I was still 38 pounds from my "goal." The Dr. I ultimately chose told me that I only needed to lose another 15 before surgery, and he was right! (Although I did manage to lose 20). I lost another 18 pounds from the surgery itself and hit goal in less than one month post-op.

I had plastic surgery 10 months after being banded and I am SO glad I did. I figured that I had already wasted enough precious time being fat, and I didn't want to deal with being "flabby" one minute longer than I needed to. I am only 2 months post-op, but having a TT and a breast lift with implants has already made a huge improvement in the way I feel about my body.

So, my advice is to get everything set up in advance, and have the sugery as soon as your Dr. advises.

Re Implants:

I have them and I love them. I wanted a nice, full breast and after consulting with 4 surgeons and looking at dozens of photos, I realized that an implant was the only way that I was going to achieve the look that I desired.

Even though I do have an implant, my breasts are not large. I went with a 400cc silicone implant which resulted in a "C" cup on my small(ish), 5'4" frame, and it's perfect for me.

Everyone is telling me that my results look very natural, and that if they hadn't known that I had surgery, they never would have guessed. Still, I do have a "shapely" look on top, which I'm very happy with.

Re TT next week, Michee:

Good luck and please keep us posted!!!! You will be so happy you did this!!!! :D:thumbup::unsure: What day are you going in?

I booked my Tummy Tuck straight after I had my band fitted, I just booked it 5 months ahead to give me the motivation that I needed, and it worked!

If I hadnt hit the goal that we set then I would have shifted the surgery back. When I went in I was still about 30lb from what I knew I wanted to be my end goal, but I knew that the surgey would give me such a boost (which it did!) that I would hit afterwards.

I am now 6lb off the goal that I set, but I have been at this weight for about 3/4 months now, I am kind of maintaining. Part of the problem is that I am so happy with the way that I look now that the impetus has kind of faded!

I had no problems with loose skin as a result of the subsequent weightloss, all it did was improve the results.

I would say go now for sure! Make sure that you choose a PS that has experiance with WLS patients and you shoudl be fine. Ask to see LOADS of before and after pics, there is no better way of judging their work.

There is a lot of planning needed for PS, so I advise an early consultation to get the facts and begin looking for the best PS.

Its easy to get tied to the scale as a measure of how "successful" you are, but the scale is only a part of the story.

A stable weight, where your diet and excercise mesh comfirtable wiht your lifestyle is far superior than starvation to satisfy some number on the scale.

I have seen patients (often bypass or DS) thin to the point of Protein malnutririon who will not heal properly from their PS and so I need to get them built up for a safe procedure.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
