Birth Control Pills before surgery

Recommended Posts

So, I receieved my pre-op instructions and diet and the paper work stated that I was supposed to stop taking all hormones. I was hoping that did not include all hormones since I am on birth control pills. I called the office and they told me that it did and I had to stop taking the pill as well by the end of the month.. my surgery is set for 9/8/2008.

Anyone know anything about this?

im on the ortho evra patch, they never had an issue with it at my hospital

please call and ask why i mean going off the pill and having surgery at the same time will eff with your cycle big time.

i took my pill the morning of surgery and my thyroid pill. took the pill at 530am had surgery at 8am.

I know all docs are different. But i would question as to why.

maybe ask your gyno too

good luck!

I am going to ask my gyno on Monday because I am worried about having to stop for a little over a month and then going back. Part of reason I take the pill is to get my keep the cycle in check. I do not want to mess up a good thing.

I was taking Depo shots and I had to stop those before surgery also. The reason is that taking hormones increases the chances of blood clots forming. I had to stop two weeks before surgery and can't start taking them again until four weeks afterward. I got my last Depo shot in January and my next one was due in April, but I didn't take it because I already knew I would have to quit them before surgery anyway. Apparently some doctors don't mind, but I guess some of them do. It's just an extra precaution. Good luck!

I was too told that I would have to stop 1 month before surgery...I have a 17 year old son and have no intentions of having another! My hubby will not be too happy but I'm not taking any chances! I have been thinking about the IUC anyway...maybe it's a good time to look into that!

My dad is a retired OBGYN and he went to a seminar about the middle of May and they were expessing the concerns of the pill not being as effective when your BMI is over 35. (Since I have a non-existant sex life right now) My dad convinced me to stop taking the pill- that I've been taking religiously for the past 22 years straight-to help reduce the risks of blood clots for my surgery. My nurse practetioner at the dtrs office agreed with that being a smart thing to do. But as soon as the surgery is over and I've lost about 20% of my weight, I'm going to start taking it again. (I like knowing when my monthly is). And that's what I know. Susan:cool2:

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
