I am 2 days post op and dying for a glass of iced tea. Something tickles my memorie about caffiene being a no no either before or after surgery, but I can't remember which. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks

hi--

i'm a coffee drinker and i don't really drink that much only about 4 cups a day. problem is they're usually 12 or 20 oz cups. (yes, i know...)

anyway my doc said NONE at all in the week following surgery and only after the 1-week checkup could i resume. and he limited me to 8 oz cup per day. (And he seemed so nice...)

my nutritionist said the time righ afte surgery was because coffee is a diuretic and doc didn't want me losing Fluid during that time. the overall desire to reduce caffiene intake was two-fold, in many people it stimulates hunger (and a lot of people use excessive cream/sugar) and it's still a diuretic. we need to keep our bodies well hydrated.

needless to say, i still drink coffee. but i make sure it's at least 2:1 Water to coffee ratio. i continue to lose and all my "other measures of health" remain good, so i guess that's working for me.

My dietician said that the reason they tell you no caffiene is because they are counseling you on "healthy living" and caffiene is "technically" a drug.

Everything in moderation. At my one week Post Op visit with my surgeon last week I asked the same question. I LOVE iced tea. She said I could have all of it I wanted, so long as I didn't sweeten it with real sugar. Defeats the purpose. She also said not to use it as a replacement for Water because it is a diuretic and won't help with staying dehydrated, which is very, very important and can't be underestimated.

Good luck!

Requirements seem to vary by doctor. Mine only said I could not have caffeine the day of surgery. So I was still ingesting several cups of sugar free coffee and diet pop before surgery. Day of surgery I had a terrible, throbbing headache and I could not take anything . . . reason for headache . . . caffeine withdrawal. If I had to do it all over again, I would have weined myself off caffeine the week before surgery.

I really do wish they would tell you the difference between 'this is going make your stomach bleed or *list terrible consequence here*' and 'it won't hurt you but xy&z isn't really healthy or has empty calories in it so moderation is expected.'

You can make ice tea out of lipton's decaff tea or buy a decaff powdered mix. Taste good just no kick to it!

what i heard from the dietian was coffee and tea are very acidic and caffine interfers with the absorbsion of Iron, plus band erosion, heartburn, and just unhealthy and acts like a diuretic. I will give up everything i need to but on a summer dayeven diluted iced tea will be in my hand !

I would go by your doctor's or nutritionist's advise but, I have a friend who had gastric bypass and ended up fighting for her life after having a perforated ulcer. They determined it was from the caffeine in a mocha whatever Protein drink she was drinking everyday. The place she used to get those drinks from even removed them from his shelves and refuses to order them for any of his customers. Not saying you should or shouldn't drink caffeine but it is something to think about and I have noticed I do seem to have more problems with acid reflux after drinking caffinated diet drinks or iced tea even. And I admit to still having to have one or the other every once in a while but since learning of my friends "hairy" experience with caffeine I have been cutting back as much as possible because I do not want that complication to possibly be a reason for being unsuccessful or delaying my surgery. Just my $0.02 worth. Good luck to all on their weightloss journey.

Cindy

As you can tell, every dr is different. I use crystal lite most of the time but some times I just want ice tea. I brew mine in an ice tea maker, yep I have one cuz I love my ice tea. I now brew it with one Decaf tea bag and 1 regular. I am cutting back on caffeine but still have the taste. Don't feel guilty either, I just enjoy it.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
