post-op headache, anyone??

Recommended Posts

Hello there!

I was just banded June 12th (4 days ago) and since then I have this terrible headache that will not go away. I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience. I figured with all the painkillers I've been taking the headache should be gone, but it's not.

Could it be from when they filled my stomach up with air? Or am I possibly dehydrated? Is this something I should call my doctor about?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

-Bella

Hi! I actually got banded on June 2. I also had a terrible headache and although I am not a big coffee drinker I decided to have a cup of coffee on my 2nd day post surgery, my headache disappeared! I couldn't believe it! If you don't think that is what it is , your blood pressure could also be a bit high from some of the stress.

It could be a side effect of the anesthesia, or carb withdrawal. They actually used carbon dioxide to inflate your abdomen. Check your B/P. I also had a headache before and after surgery, but it was due to carb withdrawal, your blood glucose level also drops, and can cause a headache.

Good luck to you! I was banded on the 12th also. I had a killer headache afterwards. I assumed that it was the anestesia, but a nurse and my doc mentioned it could be caffeine withdrawal. I stopped for a cup of dunkin donuts on the way home and slowly the headache disappeared. Hope you are felling better.

if your getting enough fliuds then its probably withdrawl or reaction from the sudden change in diet.

It could be withdraw from sugar/carbs/caffiene, it could be a side effect of the pain medicine also. The body can be fickle about sudden changes.

So many things it could be. If your really concerned call the doctor.

I had a nasty headache as well. Mine was from dehydration but I've heard that caffeine and anesthesia can also be the culprits. My doc told me that if I wasn't getting in at least 30 ounces of fluid/day, I was probably suffering from dehydration. I'd call the doc just to sure. Take Care!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
