Is "stuck" immediate? or creeps up on you?

Recommended Posts

I have been getting stuck a lot. After talking with the doctor I am back on liquids and soft foods. I have not had my first full yet. I was banded in April I should of had my first feel this week but, because I ended up in the hospital last weekend with what I thought was my heart thank God it was not. The doctor put off my first full until the 23rd. I am still having trouble eating without food getting stuck. If it does not get any better I might have to have the band remove.

Nneurell, does it happen with certain foods or all foods? How are you tolerating liquids and soft foods?

If those are going down OK, what about chewing until the food is essentially liquid in your mouth? Chew, chew, chew, and the food isn't big enough to get stuck.

Mind you if the band is doing it's job I wont be able to eat much more anyway. The great thing is I don't feel hungry anymore. Jim.

The best benefit of having the lap band, for me, is that I never feel hunger. Not once in three months.

When I get stuck I know it right away. Sometimes it lasts a few minutes and sometimes it last as long as an hour. Drinking some Water makes it even worse.

For me it's either/or. I absolutely know that I cannot eat french fries, they are an instant "stuck" not even one or a bite of one no matter how much I chew. I like fries as much as the next girl but it's not worth the discomfort that comes with eating them.

Sometimes it kinda creeps up on me. The other day when I was on a roadtrip with a friend we stopped for something to eat. I made a very sensible choice of food, ate only a few small bites and chewed thoroughly. Twenty minutes later on the turnpike I was my mouth was watering like crazy and throwing up was imminent. I have learned to to panic, it's gonna happen if it's gonna happen. I actually felt it pass through, it was instant relief just seconds before it was coming back up. I was so glad, puking in a car when you just passed the last reststop in the state would be pretty awful. Not to mention it was like 90- degrees out that day! EWWW...today my mom was eating triscuts like they were going out of style, it thought that one would be okay, I took at least 4-5 bites out of one stinking cracker, chewed it till it was liquid and like 45 seconds after the last bite I KNEW it was stuck...it's hit or miss with me but when you are stuck you surely know!

I know right away if I'm stuck. The few times I did I was so uncomfortable and yes it can be scary. I have learned to EAT slow and CHEW to a paste. I read that on here about chewing to a paste and it really has been a life saver! I don't socialize much when I am eating because I concentrate on what I am doing ( I really didn't like the stuck! lol) As gross as this may sound if I am chewing something and I can't make it a paste or I have an uneasy feeling about it I spit it out ( Discreet of course) Corn ball maybe but it works for me!! Just take your time and go slow, read this board and listen to your body! You will do GREAT!!!

It usually creeps up on me. Sometimes I know right away but often it takes 10 minutes until whatever it is tries to pass through the stoma. But usually its a quicker process, not immediate but maybe 2 - 3 minutes, and its always from eating too fast.

If I'm actually going to PB it takes longer, about 20 minutes 0of sliming an discomfort, even more, and when its about to happen, I get a hot flush, a burst of saliva and a strong pain in the stomach, exactly like when you're going to vomit, only the PB is nowhere near as unpleasant as an honest to goodness chunder.

I wish it was just quick, I could cope with that, but i fear it happening in public more than anything because I will be behind a toilet door for half an hour, and its incredibly LOUD! I envy people who can think uh oh, I'm stuck and go and relieve themselves right away. I cant seem to do it without everyone in a five mile radius knowing I'm in trouble and deciding I'm bulimic.

Just an aside: I said in another post, I dont often PB, I can get VERY stuck and it wont come up. I mentioned I was going to try a drink of Water on top to try the help it along. I tried that Saturday night, I will NEVER do that again. I'm not a panicky person but I honestly thought I was going to choke, the pressure in my chest was incredible, I couldnt breathe. Got my period today, I only EVER PB right beforehand.

Just adding to the thoughts of the others. It is immediate, or might take a few seconds. Sometimes I know there's going to be a problem when I am swallowing the bite.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
