My PB from H E double Hockey Stick

I too have problems with pork chops. They tend to be dry and they get me stuck every time. I still haven't PBd yet though, thank God. I know my day will come.

Did you actually have a PB, or were you just stuck? You describe being stuck (had the same experience in a restaurant with a black bean burger), but I thought a PB was when you actually bring the food back up. In my case I decided to break the no drinking rule, and I took some sips of Water which helped to flush down what was stuck. I agree that the feeling is not one I want to repeat. I had met a friend for dinner, and she is deaf. She had already ordered, and I was trying to scan the menu to see what I could eat, and look at her signing. We hadn't seen each other in a while so she had a lot to tell me, and it was hard to focus on the menu. First it came on a bun (bread doesn't seem to agree with me; I tried once and it got stuck, so I haven't had bread since 3/25/08). Ditched the bun. The bean burger was so dry I put ketchup on it, and that wasn't even enough. If you go to Chili's, don't order it.

This past weekend I went to a family party. I had a large alcholic drink, and drank it rather quickly, and not follwoing my usual procedure of waiting to eat after 5 or 10 minutes I saw some food. DId Ichew carefully

heck no - and all of sudden all hockey sticks froze over - they say I was green or gray around the gills.

I felt terrible kept burping up stuff - moral of the story keep with the program......:sad_smile:

Wow Coach Cher, you look fantastic. I haven't been on here for a few weeks, or maybe I have and just haven't come across your posts. What a great pic. You are quite the motivator. That's for sure.

This is all news to me and I'm getting worried. My surgery date is Aug 20th. And during our meeting I've been told about maybe coughing up food if you ate too quickly. But not getting stuck? What exactly happens and how did it get resolved? Do you make yourself throw up?

Hey Frazzled,

You are going to do fine, don't let this scare you. Let this be a lesson to you.

If you eat too fast or don't chew well enough the food can get stuck, you will get this extremely tightness feeling in your chest. The great thing about the human anatomy is your body will take over to help you out. You will start getting a lot of saliva or foaming, this is your body helping out.

As I stated I should have never let my episode go on as long as it did. I was finally able to cough up (for lack of a better description) the pork chop. I have only had one other experience that sort of compared to this episode. I have been banded for four years now so you can see it’s not the norm. PB’ing can be avoided if you chew, chew and chew some more.

Again please don’t let this scare you; we all go through it or have experienced it one time or another. Consider it your right of passage J

I guess there is good and bad things about reading posts. You hear all the positve and also the negatives. But i'm focusing on the positves because I will be no better off staying the way things are in the present. But just curious as to how it can get stuck? Do you mean close to the opening of your new stomach, once your food has traveled down your esophagus? Thanks for your speedy responds. This site is fantastic!

Yes it got stuck in the new opening, it had traveled down my esophagus and got lodged. If I had chewed it well enough it probably would not have happened. Who knows the band can be fickle at times.

Gotcha....I understand what can happen if you don't chew properly. I'm trying to chew my foods slower to get some practice but find certain foods are harder to chew like macaroni pasta.....Would some people agree that some foods post more of a risk than others? Would anyone suggest to stay away from certain foods that have posed problems for them?

Havn't had procedure yet. I'm absorbing as much information from others who have been living it personally. My fear is adjusting to a life with a band. Your accustomed your whole life eating a certain way and even when you diet you don't worry about chewing or bite sizes. So this will be a whole new way of life. I'm not that great with change so that's why I'm gathering as much real life experiences as possible. But I appreciate everyones support so far.:thumbs_up:

You do adjust I promise. When I go out to eat with friends or family I try to eat softer foods. As I have stated in other post softer foods tend to have more calories. If I know I'm going out to eat I make sure to adjust my eating through out the day so I can afford to eat some higher calorie food. Granted I don't finish a meal ever so it's not going to wreck my week or anything like that.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
