hello lapbanders

Hello everyone - my name's oren. Been lurking around here for a while, figured i'd introduce myself.

I am 26 years old, currently weigh ~375lbs (6'1") and having my lapband surgery on June 19th. I can't believe how soon it is. Doing it at Cedars Sinai in LA, with Dr Ted Khalili, who came highly recommended, and they seem to have a really good post opt support program.

I think I am ready. I fear that if I think about it too much I'll back out, so i've done all my reading and I think I am prepared, but just want to get it done and worry about everything after. Probably not the best way to go about it, but I AM ready to make changes in my life.

I am scared sh*tless of the 3 weeks of liquid, I am not going to be a very friendly person. I am also not looking forward to cutting down/eliminating drinking, as i have been working in entertainment and it has been part of my social life as much as eating has. Just one of the many sacrifices I guess, but I do hate feeling deprived.

I am meeting with my former trainer this week to get that part of my life back up and running.

So thats about it. If anyone has some good tips that I might have overlooked, feel free to share!

Hey, Oren - it's a piece of cake! Surgery just whizzes by, and recovery is just a question of honouring the restrictions your body is telling you about. Mark my words, afterwards, you'll be asking yourself what you were worried about!

The best advice is to take it easy after surgery for a while - again, listen to your body - but to keep walking. YOu'll probably experience some gas pain for the first few days (usually in the tip of your left shoulder or in your back), but that too will ease with walking. You'll be a bit stopped up at first, so taking a Fiber supplement like Benefiber is a good idea; I started when I got back from the hospital. Pain is pretty minimal, but you can help yourself in the first few days by clutching a pillow to your belly as you get out of bed or out of your chair.

In the Master Thread on the March 2008 bandsters forum in the Monthly Bandster support area, I detailed explicitly my experience, starting a couple of days before the procedure (I was banded March 6) - I posted every day for a while. It might be worth a read to know what to expect.

One things for sure: you've made the right decision. You have a life-threatening condition, and this is the most effective and safe way to take care of yourself. Welcome aboard!

Lets face it - social eating and drinking has led many of us to the lap band in the first place, so you probably are more the normal rather than the exception. I certainly fall into that category. I work in Finance, in NYC, so there is a lot "go out for a couple after work" situations. You know what - I still do - But instead of a couple more, I literally stop at 2 - or more ofter, 1, and not as often either. I find my self making better choices now, but mentally and physically - by physically I mean the band wont let me drink more than 2 beers without the signs coming on (usually the subtle pain in the shoulder is my first indication to back off). You will still be able to go out socially (its a band, not a bubble) and enjoy yourself. And you know what, the perception that people will act/treat you differently - is nonsense for two reasons 1) they dont notice/care 2) if they do, they will be happy for you (if they are not, you dont want to be around that person anyway).

Good luck to you. I think you will find this a powerfull tool and a great choice.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
