What a coincidence entwife, my older brother, nephew, great nephew and great niece, and one on the way live in Houston. I've visited Houston a few times too, but it's been a while. :o

froggi1985, I'm so glad you feel Lap Band will work for you. It sounds like you must have done your research, and are well on your way to permanent weight loss. I hope you didn't get the impression that I thought Lap Band wouldn't be successful if you had a lot of weight to lose (although, even though my BMI is at the bottom of the acceptable range, I still have so much to lose too). I really meant that I would only *consider* gastric bypass if I had more substantial problems, but I would have still weighed the options for Lap Band. The idea of the gastric bypass scares the bejeebers out of me. Best of luck to your continued success!!!

I'm with ya bas!! I, like probably many others on this board, have a huge wardrobe of clothes that, unfortunately, span many sizes. I'm so looking forward to looking forward to shopping for clothes again. Now, it's just a sad chore.

tommaney, I think you "hit the nail on the head" with this statement :tongue2::

>>His motto is "If you only have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." That is, if a doctor is only skilled at one or two surgeries, then he/she may only see patients as fitting into his/her skill set.<<

I really believe the doctor did not have ill intent in his lack luster opinion of Lap Band (ill intent meaning, the almost triple cost for gastric bypass and pushing his specialty to gain patients). If I had to guess, I think he's very excited and pleased with his patient's results from GB, and his enthusiasm spilled over to an almost negative LB presentation. Also, thanks for those great resources, I've already checked them out, and will keep them bookmarked for more research.

let me give you my take on the subject.....I weight 267 and had a bmi of 42. My dr said i could have either. I was considering bypass just because i knew i would work. But I really wanted the band because of recovery time, less cutting and reversable. i pondered this for months and on 4/4 i was banded. i have lost over 35 pounds and feel great. Yes there are rules but one can live with them. I was a diet coke nut. Now i eat my fruit last with my meal....it waters down my meal....I'm loving my band and so thankful for it. I have had one fill and don't get hungry at all.....good luck with your decision.

Hi all I am new to this site. I am so glad to have a place to turn to for some guidance. It is very encouraging to hear good things about the Lap-Band procedure. At this point my doctor is submitting my request to insurance. So hopefully all goes well and that is approved and I will soon have a surgery date!!!

Thanks for the tip about having fruit with dinner, Susanbee. That seems like it would be a very good way to "wash" down food. I'm so glad that you're having such great success.

Good luck, Regang. I hope you hear back from your insurance soon.

I have some good news. I went to a seminar with a different surgical group and had a completely different experience. The doctor was very positive and gave a more balanced view of the lap band procedure. I also went to the seminar equipped with a lot more information after spending hours reading this site. I'm going to call their office in the morning and schedule an evaluation and cancel the appointment I made with the other office. I do think that if the doctor that actually performs the lap band surgery, rather than the gastric bypass specialist, had presented last week's meeting it would have been much better, at least for me. I'm glad, now, that it pushed me to find another office. :P

Hi Kiz,

I am new to this too. I had a seminar and talk with the surgeon on May 17. My insurance is supposed to cover the surgery even though my BMI is 37.2. I have enough comorbidities to qualify, just waiting to hear something now.

I work as a transportation aide at our school district. I aide an autistic child while she rides the bus to school and home. Out of 50 or so bus drivers 6 have had gastric bypass surgery. Not one of them had a lap band. Of the 6, one has gained back all the weight she lost. She grazes all day long. I know this to be a fact because I have ridden the bus with her. Another one is still slim but she has osteoporosis and she told me it's because of the bypass. Another driver who once weighed in at over 300 pounds still maintains a slender body but she nearly lost her life because of it. She passed out while driving her bus because everything she ate went right through her! She crashed into a house and broke a lot of bones, mainly because of her body's inability to keep Calcium in her body. Her teeth also look awful. Anyway, it's been nearly two years and she hasn't been able to return to work. The last I heard she had back surgery because she broke several bones when she crashed, several were in her spine. Those women who had bypass stink up the bathroom all the time! We have ONE toilet for about 50 women!!! Do I want gastric bypass surgery? NO WAY!!! It's Lap Band for me or nothing.

My nutritionist suggested I purchase the book called Lap-Band for Life by Ariel Ortiz. I just got it in the mail on Saturday and I am almost through reading it. It's very informative and might be of interest to you. Of course you can find out tons of info on this website by reading posts. I read posts at least twice a day. Good luck with your journey. Grama Lisa

You sound like me, GramaLisa. I want to read up on everything I can get my hands ahold of, to make the most informed decision possible. After I finish reading here, I'm going to look into ordering the book your nutritionist recommended. I'm sorry to hear about all the difficulties your friends at work have experienced with gastric bypass. Some of those are heart breaking. I don't know how I could cope with gaining all the weight back after going through such a life altering surgery. I hope you hear back real soon from your insurance.

Thanks for your kind words, froggi, but I'm not surprised, because you come from a great part of the country. My husband and I were born and raised in Parkersburg. We haven't lived there for years though. I think you were probably a little baby last time we called Parkersburg home. Where will you have your surgery?

in parkersburg. I have been looking up lapband for a long time and was going to travel for it, but then I found out camden clark was getting lapband, so I am going there to get it done. they started it in march, and I should be having my surgery in november.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't choose lap band OR RNY bypass, but would choose DS or VBG instead. You get better weight loss with the last two and less complications. Perhaps you should look into all of the bariatric surgery options to help decide which is best for you.

PS - I've never been wild about Diet Coke at all, but do love Diet Sunkist and have not had any problems drinking it since I've been banded. There are a lot of myths with the band: no fizzy drinks ever again, no popcorn ever again, no bread ever again, etc....each person reacts to the band differently and you won't know exactly what you will be able to tolerate until you are actually banded.

Why do you come on here posting to people saying that other surgeries are better options? I mean seriously. I have seen you do this many times, telling people you wouldn't get banded again and would choose something else, and recommending other surgeries. People are coming here to LBT to learn about LAPBAND. But either way whatever.

That's great froggi. It'll be so much easier having your surgery and subsequent doctor's visits locally (I was born at Camden Clark too ). I would travel for it, if necessary, but nothing beats having your doc nearby.

zengirl, I'm sorry that you're not responding well to your lap band. I do have to wonder if your "cheats" aren't part of the problem. I'm a complete novice, so I'm in no position to know for sure, but it sure seems like the carbonated beverages could be wrecking havoc with your stomach pouch, leading to more hunger. I'm weaning off the carbonated drinks now. After yo yo dieting for several years, I'm going to try to follow my doctor's recommendations as much as possible. I'm sure there'll be good and bad days, but if I don't cut out the carbonated drinks, yeasty breads, and sweets, I'd be sabotaging my surgery. I know it's easier said than done, but I am a one who is very motivated by results. I have to gain a few pounds by my doctor's appointment () - never thought I'd say those words - so I am backing off my exercise a little, but I hope keeping active will help in dropping this excess weight. I do hope this turns around for you. I can imagine it must be terribly frustrating. Best wishes to you.

Sorry if I upset you, but I am only speaking from my own experience, which is what I thought this site was for. My apologies...

Well you're telling people you get better weight loss with other surgeries, which isn't neccesarily true. Maybe you shouldn't be drinking soda, carbonation causes the pouch to stretch, if you did that with any of those surgeries you probably wouldnt be losing weight like you wanted. :|

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
