Roxanne is my mom's name and she is a professor at the UofA college of nursing! Ironic! I am preband and have my first appointment with the surgeon on November 3rd. I have worked hard to get everything together, psy eval, spoke to insurance company to disccuss coverage ect... I am a little nervous though as I am just a little above 100 lbs overweight and my BMI is just over 40. I am in generally good health (blood tests good and no problems with diabetes ect.) I really want this though for many reasons, mostly that I feel unhealthy mentally and physically. I do have mild back pain, my feet hurt, and I feel so limited in the activities I can realistically do. I have always been heavy and sice I was a kid I wanted to be in sports. I was always an onlooker because I was not in good enough shape to try out. I have the same experience as most eveyone on the message boards (teased in school, dated some but not a lot and not the guys I would have liked to meet). It is not just about looking good but about overcomming a lot of these things that I really want. oh my gosh I am writing a novel here! Anyway I am really glad to meet you and hope to continue corresponding with you. Would love to know more about you!

Hi Sophia,

I can definetly relate! I am a little over 80 lbs over weight and have a BMI of 38. I keep asking myself am I doing the right thing? But know I can not keep the weight off myself - I have lost in the past but have always gained it back plus some.

I too am from AZ when is your surgery? I am having it done in Mexico by Dr. Kuri, I have heard of positive things about Dr. Juarez. Many of the friends I know have their fills done by him since he will fill for mexican docs. I am probally going to continue going to Dr. Kuri for fills because it will be a mini vacaiton for me. Plus Dr. Juarez charges $200 for fills and no fluro (I don't know if this true just hear say) Anyway I can not afford $200 for fills and my husband says to get away is great!

My surgery will be 01/24/03. Good luck with all your testing and keep me posted on your progress. There is an AZbandsters group through yahoo that meets once a month there in the valley, you might like it. I can never make it down there so haven't met any of them. I read their post all the time. Well gotta go the kids should be coming home from school anytime.

take care

Terri pre-band

Hey, kcarr. Welcome. I'm not from Tucson; I live in Surprise and was banded October 2007 by Dr Ortiz. My husband was banded the same day. I thought I would jump in here because you resurrected an old thread from four or five years ago, and the people on it have not been around the forum for a long time and probably wouldn't be responding.

Anyway, welcome to the forum and best wishes on a great outcome for your surgery. Dr Ortiz is highly respected. He has his own forum at lapbandforum.com if you want to talk to more of his patients.

I only have needed two fills and have had them both in Tijuana. I think Wasabubblebutt answered you on another thread and recommmended Dr Aceves in Mexicali for a shorter drive to get a fill.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns before or after your surgery.

Hi Tucson Gal...I have been off the boards for a few months now and feel like I want to move forward again. Took a break over the fall months and am anxious to get back into the groove and to take off my final 50! Tell me about yourself. I am in Oro Valley and have a friend who is also in the area. We would love to meet up with you. I work at the U of A, but I am available for advice 24/7. I am 16 months post op.

Please respond...you never have enough friends!

Hi all.

I'm a Tucson gal and have a pre-op appt w/ Dr. Monash January 8th. Very excited. Slightly nervous.

Anyone else banded by Dr. Monash?? Wondering what your experience was like.

:thumbup:Hi Ann!!

Less than two weeks until your surgery! Are the days starting to crawl by yet?

This week seems to be slower than most for me. And I am only going to my pre-op appt next week! LOL!

Hugs,

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
