Lost 10 pounds within a week - Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My surgery was last week - Tuesday, May 13 - I just weight myself and I lost 10 pounds already. I'm happy but is it too fast? I have been having a Optifast drink (Protein 14g) in the mornings (around 10 - 11am) and chicken broth for dinner (7pm). I been having sugar free jello's and Popsicles for Snacks plus Water.

I know I should be drinking more Protein but I just too full. I'm finishing up my last few optifast drinks and will be get my Protein Isolate powder tomorrow.

Are there any side effects since I haven't been taking less protein?

-Lisa

Lisa - I didnt weigh myself at the beginning and before I new it when I went to my doctor for my 2 week post op visit I was down almost 20 pounds. He didnt seem worried at that time so I just assumed that it was normal. when you go to the doctor I am sure he will let you know if there is reason to worry. I didnt get to much Protein in during the first few weeks for the same reason as you. just keep up the good work and you will be fine

I don't think there is a "right" or "wrong" amount of weight to lose during the first month or so of post-op. The truth is most of us are on such limited calories we are bound to lose a lot of weight. But the diets are so restrictive there is nothing we can do about it. Just take the loss as good news, because you may not always lose 10 pounds a week (but you may wish you could.)

I lost 15 pounds before my first doctor visit at 3 weeks. When I was healing I was probably eating less than a 1,000 calories a day and your body is trying to figure out what the heck is going on. If I plot from the start weight to where I am It averages about 4 pounds per week.

I don't know if your band is empty but in my case when I was losing that way I realize it has nothing to do with restriction. It has to do with the healing. It was not until I had several fills before I really found out about the band.

Good luck:rolleyes2:

I lost 20lbs. in my first 2 weeks. It will slow down once you start eating some more solid food like in the mushy stage. I was concerned about gallstones but apparently my rapid weight loss isn't worrying my Dr. just yet, and it sure as heck isn't bothering me, lol. :(

I was consuming 400-700 calories of liquids a day for the first week after surgery and at my post-op visit I had gained 1.5 lbs. Go figure. The doctor said that's very common. So I'm quite envious of you losers! :rolleyes2:

First of all, congratulations on the weight loss. And second of all: no I wouldn't worry about having lost 10 lbs. within a week. The truth is, most of that is Water weight, as the body goes through a chemical process that sheds excess Water weight when it's on high Protein and liquid diets.

Of course, I can't say how much of those 10 lbs. are actual pounds of fat or muscle that you've lost, but the odds are the bulk of it is water weight, which is why we have to make sure to continue sticking to the diet AND exercise, since this is what will truly make us lose those "fat pounds" that we want to lose. :D

Anyways, congratulations!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
