United Healthcare and AT&T

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any information that might be helpful for at&t employees with united healthcare ins. in California, getting their surgery covered? My friend works at a call center where she is required to sit all day, and you can just sit and watch all these ladies gradually gain weight over a period of a few years, and naturally they pick up a few weight related medical problems along with the extra pounds. And wouldn't you know it, AT&T does not allow coverage for WLS?! Does anyone of you know ANYTHING that my friend can do? Thanks so much.

I work for A&T and have Unitedhealthcare, although I don't work in California, I work on the East Coast, and it covers weightloss surgery here. I just had lapband surgery done in April and there are alot of people in my call center that have had the procedure done. As a matter of fact, Unitedhealthcare is one of the quickest and easiet to get approval with, at least here...maybe your friend should double check with them...

Thanks PRTazLUVA,

I'll pass that on to my friend. This particular call center used to be a Cingular Wireless before it went to AT&T, and 6 years or so ago they did pay for WLS, then probably due to A LOT of people getting it done, they stopped paying for it. United Healthcare says it is a covered benefit, but AT&T won't pay for it??

Hi, I also work for AT&T in Kansas City and I just had lapband surgery done on March 19 through United Healthcare and mine was also paid for. I've talked to someone else on this website that works for AT&T that was formerly Cingular and I know they were having problems getting it covered also. If you do a search for AT&T you might be able to find the person who was also working for AT&T (Cingular) and find out if they have had any success. Unfortunately, until the next contract is written, your friend might be stuck without any WLS coverage, but hopefully, it will get written in and she can get the surgery. Good luck.

I just found the thread from the other AT&T (Cingular) employee that I was referring to and bumped it up so you can read it. You might post a Private Message to both of the people in that thread and see what they can tell you. You'll find this thread under the Insurance & financing category on the website. Hope this helps.

Hi Tiffany, were you a Cingular employee before being picked up by AT&T? If so, you will probably have to wait for a new contract to find out if the exclusion is lifted. I was a Southwestern Bell employee before it turned over to AT&T and my UHC did not have the exclusion. I suppose you can go ahead and try, but don't be surprised if your turned down. Sorry!!

:rolleyes2:My husband works for AT&T in California and I had the surgery done in July under his United Health Care plan. United Health Care didn't even require any pre authorizations. When I first called UHC to find out if the surgery was covered I was told that there were pre authorizations required, so I fulfilled the pre authorizations then when the surgeons office called to get the authorization for surgery UHC told them that there weren't any pre authorizations that I was already covered. Your friend should call UHC herself and find out, I know my Dr's office spoke with someone named Jerry in Arizona. I know that is pretty vague but maybe helpful. Good Luck to your friend.

I work with AT&T on east coast. I was told my UHC i hae to have five year weight history from physician bmi over 40 period. I did not have all five years.. They denied me. Nothing in Appeal said they would approve surgery if I have comorbidities. I documentment them. I had four BMI's over fourty and one at 35.7 when I was taking diet pills. I'm trying to appeal. If ANYONE has a simular situation and was successful I would love to hear from you..

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
