Wallet/Purse Card

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 30/4/08 at the Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle (Manchester) Has anyone else been banded there? Did you get a card to put in your wallet/purse to state you had a band fitted?

I've been looking at the forum about getting a "Medicalert"-type dog tag/bracelet made & in reading the posts, most people also seem to have a wallet/purse card, especially those from USA. The cards have three purposes, to be used in an emergency to inform first aid staff about the existance of the band, to be used at an airport, if the titanium in the port is picked up by security and, in the USA, to get reductions/childs portions of food in restaurants. Some of the cards in the US even carry an x-ray of the band, along with the serial number of the band & their consultants name/phone number!

Has anyone in the UK got a card & also has anyone used their card to get a discount & if so, where?

And does anyone know where I can get a card from, as I have contacted both my dietician & consultants secretary, both of whom cannot supply one for me.

I'm also looking for a multi-lingual card, to be used when I go on holiday (especially as I go to Egypt a lot & there can be big language barriers! Imagine trying to explain a lap band in their airport security checks!)

Any replies would be appreciated!

Suzi :confused2:

Hi, I have just had my band fitted in Belgium on 7/05. I was given a card to carry in my wallet which basically says that I was fitted with a band, that I cant eat no more than 60g of food at a time and also that it is safe to have a MRI scan. My doctor gave this card to me along with about 15 others in all different languages, he had filled in his contact details on the back. It seems a pretty standard card so perhaps you could speak to your doctor about getting one for you.

Hi Ann,

Yes, you guessed it!! A BIG Bon Jovi fan!

When you said you "found" your card, where did you find it? I haven't been given anything, no information, nothing.

I'm going to see my consultant for the first time on Thursday, so its on my list to ask him about it! Lots of people seem to have had packs of information, band serial numbers, everything!! I'm feeling like a kid who missed out on Xmas!!

Good luck with the journey ahead. Us fellow JBJ fans should stick together!

Suzi :P

Hi,

I wouldn't worry about the airport. I travel a lot (every couple of weeks) and the metal detector has only sounded twice in the last year. Each time it was a quick frisk then on my way!

As far as medical emergencies are concerned, I asked my consultant about this and he said he couldn't think of an occaision when the medics would need too know and not be able to find out by a cursory examination.

Anyway welcome to the band !

Simon

I suppose one in a foreign language isn't much use, unless of course you happen to be travelling to that country on holiday!! I'm definitely gonna speak to my consultant about it on Thurs.

My dietician said you can get one by joining BOSPA, but that costs about £20, not worth it just for a card.

I'm working when Bon Jovi come to Manchester!!:w00t:

I live about 2 miles from the stadium & I know I'll be gutted when I have to drive past there on 22nd!! I just had a nightmare journey home this evening & have only just got in, cos the Foo Fighters are on & the roads are gridlocked! I can usually hear the music in my back garden, if the wind is in the right direction, so if I get home at a reasonable time & its not raining, I might sit out in the garden & sing along (God help the neighbours!!)

I saw them & Nickelback in 2006 & it was awesome!! Are you going?

I was banded in Manchester and I got a card. It shows a picture of the band [not mine just an illustration] and says that I have a band fitted.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
