Anyone Banded Since 2003?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I was banded in 2005-3 years out. 80 lb. lost. I too am having issue w/ reflux and GERD. Scares me & I am afraid to sleep. I have taken up sleeping up right & take Nexium. I don't know what band I have, but I've been checked for slipage twice... x-rays. I've been emptied, but I couldn't maintain my weight without it so it is about 3/4 full. I live w/ the GERD. A trade off.

From this site, which I only sought out a support site this week, I have already picked up a few tips that might help. (I am looking for answers my doctor doesn't give.)

First, no one ever mentioned to me that if you vomit go on liquids for a day or two. No one mentioned the swelling vomiting could cause.

Second, someone recommended drinking warm tea to sooth the stomach.

I am still looking for a solution for sinus drainage messing with your stomach and I'm sure I'll find it here.

I see my doc in Dec. and boy, do I have questions!

Would I do this again? In a heart beat! I weigh 171 & my BMI went from 41 to 29. I went from a size 22-24 to a 14. Am I skinny? No. But I can move and I no longer have handicap plates!

Don't give up. Keep asking questions and get 2nd opinions!

PS- What is sliming?

I am so glad to have found this thread. I have been banded since February of 2004. Everything was going great until Oct. 2007 when they told me I had some esphogus problems. He took all my Fluid out and I gained back 45 pounds. I have a swedish band that holds 12 cc's of fluid and am just now back up to 10.5 in my band. I received my third fill in seven months last week and am back to the throwing up and not sleeping. However, the trade off for getting this weight off seems to be worth it. I love my band and hate to read that complications start happening around the five/six year mark. I have been so much better with the band and would do it again without thinking. However, I am ready to get back to my skinny self that this band helped me achieve. Thanks for the great post. Now I know that I am not the only "old bander" that exist. They need to start a good thread with us old timers!!

Hi-

I thought I would post an update to my June post on this thread. In July I had my band removed. It's not the outcome I wanted, but my doctor felt there was too much scarring to give me another one.

Since then, I've regained quite a bit of weight and I'm almost back at my starting weight pre-band.

It's so hard... I'm now investigating the gastric sleeve.

All this and I'm still pro-band. However, I do suggest that before having the band or any other WLS that you research this in depth. I subscribed to the Obesity-related medical journals so that I could read the studies coming out about the various WLS methods. Don't rely upon these boards for your statistics. Speak with your surgeon and read the medical reports for yourself.

My surgeon cooborated what I've read in several journal articles that complication rates for bands are as high as 25%. And a good number of patients will require intervention at the four or five year mark and beyond.

If you are a long-time bandster and experiencing complications or weight gain, please don't hide out from your doctor. Please get evaluated.

Wishing you all the best~

Anyone out there that has been banded since 2003? I Iwould be interested in knowing how you are doing? I was one of the first dozen banded by my surgeon 5 years ago an am curious how some oldies feel.

I was banded in 2002 in mx. I was almost at my goal (shy of 15 pounds are so) and I have gained it all back because of lack of know how. So I am set for a fill in Jan and ready to shed some weight.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
