May 1st bandsters!!!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on Thursday morning and got home today at 1pm.

The procedure wasn't bad at all!! I was up walking right after the surgery.

I walked a lot yesterday and today and was diligent about my breathing exercises.

My doc prescribed morphine and I had a bad reaction to it...profuse sweating and nauseous...was even heaving a little bit. They switched me to oxycodone and I was much better!!

Today they had me do a "swallow" test to be sure there were no leaks in the band. The solution that I had to swallow was NASTY, but I was a good patient!!!

I plan to catch up on sleep since I got none in the hospital

Overall, not a bad experience.

Hi Kikival: I slept pretty well last night. Today is only day 2 post-op. I woke up in the middle of the night to take more pain meds, but I honestly wasn't in very much pain. I mostly took it so I would sleep. I am thinking of only taking liquid Advil during the day and the pain meds at night. I woke up with a headache and neckache today. Maybe it was from when they put the breathing tube in.

The only cheating that I am doing is that I am having my 1 cup of coffee. I took 2 tums before and will take 2 afterwards so the acid doesn't build up. I NEED my 1 cup of coffee!!!! Otherwise, it will be all liquids for me today. Tomorrow I can start my 1 Protein shake per day........

I am going to take it very easy this weekend because I will be back to work on Monday.

The name of the game right now is, walk, rest, sip, rest, walk, etc......

In the hospital they will give you a little device that you have to breathe into as hard as you can. My device has 3 balls. You have to try to get all 3 balls to the top with your breath. It is to make sure you are exercising your lungs. My doc also told me to cough at least 2 times per hour.....

Isnt that x-ray stuff nasty!!! Oh well, its quick and gets the job done and the result is that you are assured that the band is working properly.

Congrats!!!! I am a May 1 bander also!

Yes, the brown liquid that I had to swallow was disgusting, but it was only a sip. After that I had to take a sip of barium which tasted like a smoothie after that nasty stuff!!

It is 5 days out. I am feeling great!! sleeping on both sides and sleeping well through the night. I am not taking my diabetes meds because already my sugar numbers are normal!!! Amazing!!!

I can only have the equivalent of 1 Protein shake a day. I divide it into 2 meals and believe it or not, they REALLY fill me up!!! I am drinking broth, tea, Water, popsicles during the day between my shakes...

I am drinking my 64oz of Water per day. That is a little tough, but I am doing it.

Best of all, I am already down 8lbs!!! That is just amazing to me!!!!

Where are the May 1st bandsters? How is everyone doing? My incisions are almost completely healed and I am doing pretty well with the Protein and the Water. I do get hungry, but I am eating every 2 hours.

I ate 1 pce of pizza yesterday. I pulverized each bite in my mouth before I swallowed. Biggest victory is that I only ate 1 piece and I was COMPLETELY satisfied!!! That is a far cry from what I used to eat!!!

I hope everyone is doing well. Why don't you all check in and tell us about your victories??

Hey ya'll. Well, I am doing OK. I have been on mushy food now for some time and can't go to soft solids till around 1 Jun. I have my first fill on the 28th of May. A little scared. I have found I have been getting more hungry lately. I can not imagine eating a piece of pizza bandfan. I am sure that was wonderful!!! I did make some chicken parmesan with chicken tenders and spagetti for my family a few nights ago and put a little of it in the chopper and blended it up and ate a little of that. It was pretty good. A few noodles didn't blend all the way but, I made sure I chewed them "to liquad"...ha! I have found that I've been having some pain just below my port more toward and ovary area? Not sure if it is all tied together with muscle and it is all just trying to get situated. It comes and goes. So, not sure if maybe it is even gas? I am going to try a gasx strip tonight and see if it clears it up. We'll see. Sounds like everyone is doing well. When do you all get fills? You'll have to let me know how it goes if its before the 28th. Take care all! :biggrin2:

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
