Mexico surgery post-op questions

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm less than a week away from my date, scared as hell, but excited too. I'll be flying to Mexico alone for my surgery and have a few questions about the post-op stay and the travel home. First, should I pack pajamas, or will I be wearing a hospital gown? Stange question, I know, but at home I sleep in the buff and will need to buy PJ's to bring, if needed. Second, just how uncomfortable is that plane ride going to be?! I mean, I'm not planning on wearing tight jeans for the ride home, but should I pack a mumu?

Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Robin

Hi Robin. Just a t-shirt and sweats would work out well for the first few days of recovery. You want comfort, and it's hot down there. Plus, your sleep will be off and on like with any procedure and you will want to do some walking.

Changing clothes for this and that is too difficult. Slip on shoes like backless sneakers would be a plus. Easy on and off thru security plus they double as slippers.

The plane ride was no different than any other for me...didn't feel anything specific to the band. But my flight was just from LAX to SLC...just a few states over.

Have fun! And let keep us posted on your progress.

The answers to your questions are probably going to vary from surgeon to surgeon. Are you going to be staying in a hotel before or after surgery? Will you be in a hospital or a clinic? You might want to think about bringing some loose elastic waist shorts and a tee shirt to double as pjs, if you don't want to go out and buy something especially for this trip that you won't use afterwards.

Thanks for the info. Makes alot of sense LOL I think I'm too nervous to be thinking straight right now.

I'm going to Mexicali and my surgeon will be Dr. Aceves. I'll be staying in a hotel for the first night, then 2 nites in the hospital (I think the hospital is called Almater). Fortunately, I'm only flying from San Diego to Albuquerque, a relatively short flight.

hi nomoretwinkies, flight wise you should have no issues, my flight was no different than any other I've ever been on, wore comfortable clothing and flew from seattle to San Diego, as for pj's, you could just wear the hospital gown that they put you in, I brought my own pj's and as soon as I was awake I changed into them, mainly cause that is just the way I am, I feel better in my own clothing with my own pillow (which I brought with me) and had some sandels that have a back on them but I had no pain so the bending etc was no issue for me.

Good Luck,

I was banded 3/25 by Dr. Ortiz in Tijuana.

i just got banded on 04/21/08 but here in the states. i'm kinda a girlie girl and i thought i was going to be one of the people up and running the next day.

i chose to stay one night in the hospital so i brought pj's, a change of clothes, my hair dryer and curling Iron lol

needless to say, i never changed into my pj's because i still had an IV in and didn't want to go thru the hassle of changing... so i never wore my pj's. i just wore the same clothes home that i did to the hospital... so a waste of packing an outfit. i just threw my hair into a ponytail because i was too sore to take a real shower... so a waste of packing all the hair accessories.

pack simple and light! good luck!!

bring a pillow, theres are any good. also bring cloths that are easy to remove. you will want to walk to get ride of the gas after surgery. face cloths as well, unless you are with dr kuri , he gives a gift bag, with toothpaste, brush, cloth, soap.

good luck

I was banded by Aceves 2 years ago. Yes it is Almater hospital. I too stayed 2 nights following surgery. I did lots of walking. You will be given hospital gown...or 2 one to use as a robe if you want, or you can take whatever you choose to wear for comfort, just keep IV access in mind for the time you will have it.

I flew home the day I got out of the hospital, the flight was easy. I kid you not the worst part was the ride from Mexicali to San Diego, not for driving reasons, but the van had leather seats, and I felt like I was holding on to keep from flying off!!

I have to run....company showed up--I will pop back later and give you the tips I was given!!!

I had surgery on the 18th with Dr. A and you will want some pj's, or sweats. I took two pair and was fine with that. The day of surgery I walked A LITTLE bit and then the following day, I tore the halls up but just take it as you can. The bed mattresses are firm, not necessarily comfortable for a softer is better girl like me, and the pillows are so-so but the hospital is beautiful and the care is OUTSTANDING! The surgery is a breeze so just let yourself heal and enjoy the care!

Thank you all so much for the info. I'm one of those people who likes to be uber-prepared, so the more I know, the better. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
