Acid Reflux and couging

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had these problems after a fill? I was banded in April 2006. I've only lost a little over 20 lbs.

I got a fill in March. The acid reflux started about a week after the fill. I went back to the MD. He said I was probably eating too late at night. He did not adjust it.

I went back April 9. I had gained 3 lbs since March. I told him it was the first day of my cycle. He said that didn't have anything to do with it and he gave me another fill.

The acid reflux started again that night. Last night I didn't have reflux, but the coughing kept me up most of the night. I woke up with a terrible headache.

I feel like I have a constant tickle in my throat.

I am miserable. I don't go back to see the MD until May 9.

He did mention the last time that if the reflux wasn't better then he would do the swallow test to see if there was a problem with the band.

I did tell him if further surgery was required then I would have the band removed permanently.

Has anyone else had these problems?

Thanks!

Lisa

Hi Lisa, first of all, the Dr should have given you the swallow test. They usually have half of glass of Water available after a fill, if the Water doesn't go straight, the doctor has to decompress or un-fill you. I am hoping that I shed some light on you. Did you say you got banded in 2006? Who is your Doctor? I got banded in 2007 and I've been going in for a fill every two months. I have reached my goal, am now bound for reconstructive surgery... Tummy Tuck and breast lift with augmentation.

Lani:

My doctor makes you drink two glasses of Water before you can leave the office when you have had a fill.

There weren't any problems either time.

The reflux started just two months ago. I think that's what has me worried. Everything was fine until March.

Hello Sharp,

I am having the exact same symptoms as yourself. The coughing at night and after I eat, I also have had a headache from the coughing.

I was banded in 02/07 and have had more than 10 fills (my doctor is extremely conservative with fills). I just had my most recent fill a week ago. My experience with this is that it usually goes away after a few days as the band loosens a bit. I have been too full in the past, to the point where Water would not stay down. So I am confident that I am not overfull this time, I can eat and drink, just lots less.

I can't tell you what you should do in your situation but I am going to wait it out another week or so and see if it loosens just a bit. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply.

My doctor is conservative with fills also. I don't know why this fill has bothered me so much.

I had lost down to 206, then when I went April 9 I was back up to 209.

I really think after $10,000+ on this operation and all the visits I should have lost more and not be so uncomfortable.

Today has been really uncomfortable. I had the coughing really bad last night and it has continued off and on throughout the day.

I thought I would tough it out til May 9 and see what he says.

Do you have a constant tickle in the back of your throat? Since this started I feel like I have something stuck in my throat, but with all the coughing I know there is nothing there. Is this a symptom of reflux?

WOW we even weigh the same. Talk about having stuff in common. I was down to 206 also and when I weighed in last Tuesday (before my fill) I was back up to 209 also. Today I am back down to 206. We are also the same age. My personal goal is to get under 200 and it has proven to be elusive thus far. That's why I'm going to try my best to keep this fill. I don't seem to have the tickle in the back of my throat as you mention. One thing that does helps me at night, is drinking a glass of Water to rinse out my pouch before going to bed.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. It has been a very busy week!

I feel a little better, but I don't feel as good as I should. I'm awake now because I'm coughing again.

I had one night I made it through the night.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
