How do I explain it?

Recommended Posts

On Saturday, my husband and I had dinner together and I was distracted and ate a piece that was too big, or ate too fast. My fault entirely, but I started with the PBing and it wouldn't end until I lost the entire meal. It wasn't much to begin with, but my body just wouldn't settle down.

I was trying to explain to my husband that I must have had a piece that was too large blocking the entrance to my lower stomach and even though I was spitting up some of it, saliva was filling up my small pouch and it had nowhere to go but up and out. But he just couldn't get his head around it and I couldn't explain it any better either. I tried to say about the air between the two stomach areas (hence the burping) and an illustration with a funnel, but he wasn't getting it.

I ended up BPing for half an hour and when I thought it was finished, I drank a glass of Water to clear me out and then I started losing that too. I promise to be much more careful, but can anyone explain to me why this would happen, and how to explain it to him? And is there any stomach acids in our small section? If we get something stuck it won't really ever go down will it?

BTW, I didn't see any huge chunk that would have caused all this fuss. Sorry to be graphic, but you all know where I'm coming from.

In the process, we went next door to our neighbour's place for a fire and they wondered what was wrong with me. I decided that I didn't want them to think I was ill, so I told them about the band. They blinked and changed the subject! They've said nothing more about it. Not the reaction I was expecting, that's for sure.

Thanks for your help.

Mary

It might not have been a chunk it might have been too much food.. it is really hard for people who aren't banded to get the whole I just have to move sometimes or I will puke.. tell him it is like thanksgiving dinner or Christmas when you eat too much you feel gross and like vomiting and don't want to move, but you go the extra step to vomiting.

People react differently dont read too much into it... one of my best friends stopped talking to me for a few years because she wouldn't ask and I wouldn't tell without her asking me... and she got mad. Who knows it is a private thing to me so I tell some and don't tell others.

And you explanation was good, nonbanded people just don't get it.. even my RNY friends don't get it

Oh I so get it now. Was out on a business dinner, ordered the pickeral - it was so good, I couldn't stop eating.

About 15 minutes later I didn't think I was going to make it out of the restuarant. I was able to keep it in and down to avoid a most embarrassing moment, but have never been so happy as to get back to my hotel room.

I have learned a very important lesson.

marivan. You did an excellent job of explaining to your husband what was happening to you. It is his job to try and understand. Let him "chew on" your explanation for awhile. It will sink in. It did with my DH. Now he is more supportive.

Also, after I vomit, I find I must go back on Protein Drink for 24 hours or so. Because if I eat too soon after, I am nauseaous (sp?) all over again. By giving my stomach a short rest, I am hoping I am lessening any damage I may have caused.

Well I get the saliva and feeling I have to vomit. Same feeling I get when I have the stomach flu. When I over eat or don't chew, I have real pain. But eating too soon after vomiting always brings this feeling.

As for the post above, I just want to add, you owe no one an explanation. If you are under the weather or feel like you are going to vomit in public all you have to say is "I think I have a bit of the flu coming on". It won't be the first time someone has been ill in public that does not have the band.

As for me now, I haven't eaten for 4 days although I am able to get some bariatric drink down. I have known I am going to have dental surgery and I guess the stress has closed my band opening.

Let us know Angie when you get a surgical date.

Hey Doddie,

I had a big dental surgery last month! Are you comfortable sharing what yours is? What do you expect to happen with eating etc?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
