Treating Weight Regain after Weight-Loss Surgery

By Lloyd Stegemann, MD

One of the greatest fears of patients seeking weight-loss surgery is the fear of weight regain. This is understandable considering that virtually every patient that has undergone weight-loss surgery has at some point been a “Yo-Yo Dieter” during their weight-loss journey.

It is not uncommon for a surgical candidate to relate stories of losing 10 pounds, 20 pounds, sometimes even 50-100 pounds with dieting attempts, only to see it return over time.

The good news is that with weight-loss surgery, the weight-loss seen post-operatively can maintain throughout a long period of time. However, it is important that patients keep in mind that obesity is a chronic disease that is not cured by surgery. Surgery provides a powerful tool for significant weight-loss, but without proper care “the tool” can lose its effectiveness, leading to weight regain.

Just wondering if anyone has tried appetite suppressants with the lapband or if someone could reccommend something to help the hunger feelings. I haven't been filled enough yet, only 3 cc's. I have lost 30 lbs in 3 months but at a stand still now.

Thank you!

Hi there, just looking to talk to people who have had the lap band put in and what their experiences are/were like. Both good and bad. I want to know all the stuff that doctors don't necessarily tell you. I'd like info from real people who've done weither it's good or bad.

The doctors do not tell you how hungry you will be and especially emotional eaters will have a hard time with this and need long-term therapy.

The biggest thing I have learned is that now I'm at goal, I cant stop doing what I did to lose weight. My calore intake has not increased, I still have to "diet" (meaning I cant just eat what I want when I want) and I still run five times a week for an hour and do two or three hour long circuit training sessions. Maintaining a healthy weight is a big and time consuming job, jsut the same as losing it. If you think you can go on a diet, lose weight and then not have to think about it so much, you're doomed!

People who "dont have to think about their weight" do not suffer from the disease that is obesity. Those of us who do will always have to work at it consistently to not become obese again. And I definitely need a tool like the band to help me do that.

Mike:

I have to agree with Jachut, however I'm not quite at goal yet. Nobody told me that the last 20 pounds would take so long. I love my band and my biggest regret is that I didn't get it done sooner.

Best wishes to you.

Sue

WLS isn't the easy way out - it's work...

It's only a tool - you gotta eat healthy and exercise

It doesn't take away our head hunger which for me manifest it's self in to physical hunger even when I am physically full.

I love my band as it did help me get to goal but gotta say it only did 25% of the work and I did the other 75% of the work - I eat healthy and I exercise - I don't eat around my band.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
