Erosion & Re-Banding

Recommended Posts

This is something Ive wondered for a long time...

If you are diagnosed with erosion and your band is removed - after a length of time - can you get another band?

I have read where people have been rebanded if the erosion hasn't been bad, however if it was bad then they can never have a band again.

There are several people on some of the other boards that had erosion and have been rebanded.

Again, I have only read this about other people's experience with the band.

Paula, this is a question that gets asked at my doc's pre-op meetings all the time. The answer is always "it depends." I've certainly heard of situations where bands have been removed and replaced later on, but can't swear those removals were erosion-related. I'd imagine it would depend on the degree of damage and then the degree of healing.

So, the bottom line? It depends. :)

Pat

Erosion is when the band and the stamach walls don't get along and the band works its way thru the wall into the stomach area. If your body has a reaction to the band this can happen. But remember the band is placed around the stomach then the stomach is sewen over the band so when erosion accurs there is not a hole created to the outside. But the band has to be removed.

At my Dr seminars this question is asked alot also. And my Dr has same answer as Alex's DR.(they must talk on the phone)... It depends. He further states if the erosion if from the body rejecting the band then until one is made of another substance you wouldn't be getting a new one. If its caused by another source, and I don't know what they would be, you may be able to have a new one placed once the stomach heals from the first erosion.

I may be wrong but didn't Vera's band erode and she is getting a new one???

Vera's band didn't erode, I think it was just a leaky tube. The tube had already been "fixed" once, and this time the question was whether they'd fix it again or replace the whole thing. Happily they were able to replace the whole thing, since the first band she got was defective. But there was never anything wrong with the band part or her stomach. Thank goodness!

Paul I have heard from others who had erosion do get another band after about 6 months wait, and other's don not. I have a firend fright now who had her bandfor a year and a half and had erosion she is now waiting 6 months and her doctor will give her another band. I think it depends on each individual and their circumstances. I know of another woman who had 2 bnands erode so she will never be able to get another one

obesityhelp.com has a post from a lady who had to have hers removed and they found a hole in her stomach..she then had them switch to the RNY. quite the scary thought to one waitng for a band. my doc said most will just errode and become part of the stomach..thus not working..or errode and become in the stomach..and have to be removed. either way i vote reband for myself.

Funny thing is, that in a case of erosion and the need for removal my insurance will pay for the RNY. But they won't pay for the lap band itself or fills. Go figure!

Jenna, in January - we switched to a new ins. comp. This new one is like yours - will pay for NOTHING related to a band - but will pay nearly everything for a RNY.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
