Barium Swallow for Fill - Help!!!

Recommended Posts

I'm going for a fill on Friday, when I get a fill they usually have me swallow this barium which is thick and chalky tasting and they always say that I am full enough and don't hardly give me 1 cc, I think to date I probably am at almost 2cc. Is there a trick to making this liquid go down fast so that I can actually get me some restriction. I want to be able to eat 4 ounces of food, you know carry a baby container to work with my lunch in it. I want to actually be full off of a Protein Shake and not have to eat a yogurt with it and still hear my stomach growl one hour later. Any advice you can give me will be good. I don't have to have my fill done it front of the xray machine this time so I'm excited about that.

I have to drink that stuff everytime I go. It's white and chalky and taste pretty bad. They usually have me lift my shirt and stand in this machine and pull up my body on a projection type screen before sticking me with the needle but in the office they just feel for my port and stick me based on that. But I don't swallow I usually sip and I think that is where my problem comes in at. I need to learn to swallow the liquid.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
