Guiding Light (US Soapopera) just started a storyline with the lapband

Recommended Posts

There have been hints and rumors lately that the character Ashlee on Guiding Light was going to have a weight loss show. Not just behind the scenes but it was actually going to be scripted into the show. And this week it has actually started to air.

They haven't come out and explained it to be the lapband instead the characters just keep referring to "WLS" but there have been a couple scenes with a pamphlet about the surgery and it is titled "GastroStrap System". As far as I can tell from Google there is no such thing but it sure sounds like a band to me. I can't see how that could be twisted into RNY or one of the other versions of WLS.

It's kind of silly actually, if the show isn't specifically paid for product placements they will go unnecessarily out of there way to change labels and logos. For instance I noticed the other day at one of the stores a character was shopping in the little credit card symbols next to the register that looked like Visa and Master Card actually read Vista and Master Care or something similar.

Too bad Allergan couldn't have found a way in on this one it would have been great advertising. The realise band wouldn't have a shot however as it is by Johnson and Johnson which is a big rival of Proctor & Gamble who produces the show.

For those that don't watch the show Caitlin VanZandt who plays Ashlee is one of the best actresses on the show. She is already beautiful and just shines on the screen. I have absolutely LOVED watching her character develop on the show.

I am so proud of her allowing (or I almost suspect - pushing) for this storyline to be told. It would have been so easy for her to have just hid it and let everyone think she had managed to lose with Diet & Exercise alone.

One of the best parts of this being a soap is that it can show some of the issues we have to face both coming to the decision to have the band as well as living with it.

P.S. Caitlin - If you are lurking around LBT, I wish you nothing but the best. YOU ROCK!!!

Guess I'm the only one that watches Guiding Light. It's been interesting already even though it isn't getting a lot of airplay there is a fairly active conversation going on about the band and WLS in general on the shows community forum pages.

Guess I'll just have to be content to talking to them about the show.

I don't watch the Guiding Light, but I think it's great that they are bringing WLS to the forefront. It's been a dirty little secret for so long, it's time that people wake-up and realize that it's part of the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and it works!

I've never seen the show, but I think it's great that they are working her real life situation into the show. I just hope it's not made to poke fun at the lapband. Hopefully they will show the good and the sometimes bad parts of the journey.

I do like soap operas though. I watch General Hospital and Days of Our Lives. I get the soap channel so I can just surf the guide to see when it airs.

I don't watch soaps and I'm not sure I've even heard of Guiding Light.

(Ok, I did watch a few seasons of Passions TIVOed from SciFi because I went to school with one of the actors and thought it was hilarious).

I'm confused tho. A RL actress on the show had lap-band, and now they've worked it into her character's storyline? So the actress WAS fat on the show, but is NOW skinny and has also NOW gotten a gastric strap while skinny? Or she wasn't on the show until she was already skinny, and now her skinny character has a strap? (Replace skinny with average, normal, etc. - it's just easier to type).

Ok, I've to ask, which character did you go to school with? I used to watch Passions a little here and there because it came on right after Days of Our Lives. I'm just curious because I am pretty familiar with most of the characters.

She is overweight on the show so we will be watching her lose weight, hopefully. I don't know if the actress actually had the surgery or will be having it.

I don't watch the show but I read another post about it so I went to cbs.com and watched a little of Thursday's episode where she told some dude she decided to have the surgery.

It is only a rumor as far as I know that she has had it in real life but she has been losing some weight as of late so I think it may be true. She is still fairly overweight at least it appears so next to all the other very thin actresses on the show.

Oh and the "Dude" she was telling about it, is her boyfriend on the show. He is not bad on the eyes, though a bit young for me. Best of all they had their first an on screen "love scene" this week. Everyone on the GL board which I never visited before this storyline started, is all happy that the show didn't shy away from showing them in an intimate moment just because of her weight.

He has been supportive for the most part but still keeps trying to talk her out of it based on the idea that he loves her as she is now and that she doesn't need to lose weight just to please him or others. Sometimes that kind of "support" isn't very supportive for me at least, though no one on the GL boards can understand that.

I watched one of the online shows, the one where she goes to the doctor (I think it was the 10th's show). Very interesting to me. I may have to watch it now just to see what happens. That's all I need, another soap opera to watch, lol. My curiosity has gotten the best of me, so I'm sure I will tune in to it.

I'm all about supporting the band, but I think a more dramatic soap storyline would be for her character to have had the DS and have the other cast members deal with the nightmare digestive issues!!! That, I might watch....:huh2:

I have watched Guiding Light since I was a kid! Every other thing in the world has been brought up on this show. It's about time that they did something on weight loss. I think Ashley is beautiful the way she is, I can't wait to see her transformation!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
