Hi - I am thinking of having tghe gastric sleeve with Dr. Aceves in August. I started the process by contacting Nina. How was your experience with Dr. Aceves? I am from Toronto, Canada and I have so many fears (?) with the thought of flying to Mexico for this. Any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Dr. Aceves banded me and then did a revision to a sleeve later. He's great! I would (and did) go back to him.

Sleeves are fantastic, I love mine so far.

I was also banded by Dr. Aceves, and have had nothing but a positive experience. I can't recommend him and his team highly enough!

Martinez isn't there anymore???

People really like him a great deal, I know of one person that specifically asked for Martinez to do her entire surgery.

Dr Martinez is still there. Dr Romero, who was doing something like a residency with Dr Ortiz's clinic and was doing fills there among other things, has moved on to another specialty (I have heard cosmetic surgery, but that's in the realm of a rumor). Dr Ortiz has two other doctors there who do fills under fluoro for his clinic, plus an anaesthesiologist and a cardiologist.

I have been on this forum for about a year now, and I see very few Ortiz patients complaining about their treatment at his clinic. I do see comments occasionally from non patients who have "heard" bad things about his clinic, although they rarely say where they have heard such things. My experience has always been good there, and I have been to his clinic seven or eight times with my daughter, for my own surgery, for dental work, and for fills for my husband, so I feel I have pretty extensive experience for someone who has had no complications or problems of any sort. I don't see Dr Ortiz for fills and aftercare there, but his staff is capable and caring.

I have never heard anything negative about Martinez, only glowing reports. I'm glad he's still there.

I am going to report what happened to me and then that is it no reading the threads later to see respones, too much fighting. So far on this chat fight I have found a lot of it very upsetting when you need support. This is what happened to me.

I was banded July 4th at Bajanor in Mexico. I had complications afterward my intestines not wanting to work. I stayed at the hospital that Saturday, my surgery was Friday night and then I was sent home at 4:15 am in the morning. I am still not doing well. I am not able to work. I have a very successful business and have lost $1,000's due to this. NO DOCTOR WILL SEE ME THAT SPECIALIZES IN BARIATIC CARE WITH COMPLICATIONS!! They all told me to go to the ER. Yes, I called before I went to Mexico to find aftercare but the chances of complications were so low that I didn't think about it. Yes, I think I picked a doctor to quickly and did not research enough. The pictures on the website and the doctors they had were not what was actually there. Harldy any one spoke English, I could go on and on what happened to me but I have posted about it on this site before. I just wanted to let others know that things do happen and if I had to do it all over again I would not go to Mexico. I would have stayed longer in the hospital and would continue to get care if I had it done close to home. I do have an appt. on Monday with a doctor and that is when I will tell him what is happening but I am scared that they will send me to the ER. So, that is it. Please make the best and wise choice for yourself.

I am very sorry that you didn't have a good experience but to be honest, you didn't go to one of the better surgeons so you didn't do your research, and you didn't find aftercare before you had surgery despite all the warnings on this forum.

I do hope you feel better soon.

Yes, I did have aftercare for fills and such that I even had an appointment for follow-up before I left. Thank you for your concerns and not every one looks at this site before surgery.

Since you are in KCMO did you check out Dr. Malley for aftercare issues? I hear he sees Mexican banded patients. I've heard both good and bad about him. Not sure where the truth is.

Yes I checked with Dr. Malley and made an appt. before I left. I can't even get in to see him until Oct. 2oth. They do have a new doctor coming in and I will get in sooner but not until Aug. I have appt. tomorrow with Surgical Weight Loss Centers they seemed not to have their "stuff" together but I got to have a follow up some where. None of these doctors would see me for complications. How long until you started feeling like you could go to work or go to a movie or to the store or.....?

I really had no problems after my band or my sleeve. I was able to do anything an everything at about day #3 or #4.

Specifically, what complications did you have?

I too choose a doctor that I knew little about and no one on this site had used. I felt ok to leave the day after surgery, yes they had included a night at a hotel, but when I was on pain meds and drip IV for 24 hours I felt better than I did after 10 hours of getting home.

Im not sure what complications you have or if they are normal. It still hurts to tie my left shoe or get in and out of bed. I was banded July 9th. Im still feeling tired and moving very slowly. I did go grocery shopping on the way in from the airport the day after my surgery, so I guess I can do that, but that just added to my exhaustion. Im thinking its normal to feel tired. Are you getting enough Protein? I started Protein shakes last night.

I am doing soooo much better. I am at work today. I have to make a lot of money in a week! I had no idea that I would be off this long. I am so glad that I am better. In a week I will be ready to kick some butt and start excersing! They way the weight when you first lose it is just Water and you will start to gain that back. Is that true. They also said that Protein is energy, that is not correct is it?

I was on a IV for 24 hours when I was in Mexico, so I actually gained 3 lbs.

Protein will build muscle which in turn will burn the fat on your body. I know when I did Nutrisystem they actually added Protein powder to 99% of their food, thats why their food works so well. They add soy bean Protein Powder. You almost have to get used to the slight taste as its in your dinner, your evening brownie etc. You need between 60 - 80 grams of protein a day once you are able to get there on this diet. I know Im not there, and not hardly losing because of it. Maybe it would be better to say Protein will give you more energy?

Carbs are quick energy. Protein is a more steady fuel. You definitely need a lot of protein when you are recovering if you don't want to feel draggy and tired.

I went to New Life just outside of Tijunna in October '07. Down 70 lbs. Everything went well without a hitch. Care was excellent and facility spotless. The contact, patient coordinator is Kristal Cardenas at 505.804.1668.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
