alcohol and weighloss

Recommended Posts

I am so down and frustrated with myself! I told myself that once I had the band I would control my drinking or give it up all together. I did good at first and now I am slipping. When I binge I probably put down 1000 calories in alcohol. Due to this my weightloss has halted and I have gained a pound. Any words of encouragment would be great!

You already know what you need to do. Get into an AA meeting. Ask your family to help you. Whatever situations make you want a drink, avoid them! If you can't avoid those situations, seek counseling. Since you posted this in the 12 step forum instead of in one of the other support forums, you already know that this goes deeper than just weight loss. Seek the help you need in real life, because it is a real problem. Don't give up, your son needs you to not give up.

You need to stop using to loose weight. If you can't stop for any reason then you have a problem. It is a problem you can over come. But it is a problem. Do 90 meetings in 90 days and you will understand.

It's the obvious answer and one that your inner voice doesn't want to hear.. BUT... here it is...

STOP DRINKING!

I know... easier said than done... but you OWE it to yourself to do so through whatever means necessary. As other posters have said, there is AA.

If you're not a big fan of AA, I recommend seeking a therapist who specializes in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and ONLY CBT. This type of therapy focuses on your self-talk and the ways that distorted thinking affects our lives. It is EXTREMLY effective and insurance companies love it because significant results are often shown in 10 sessions or less.

Congratulations for recongizing that alcohol is an issue that is affecting your weight loss and wanting to do something about it. After all, admitting that you have a progem is 9/10ths of the journey towards overcoming it!

Remember to tell yourself daily that you WILL be successful and that NOTHING will stand in your way!

Thanks Westcoastfatguy. I appreciate your post, I have thought about therapy but was unsure what type of therapist I needed, they are all so different. I am not into AA, I have tried it 4 times over the last 3 years and it always fails me. I am not the type of person who can sit in a smoke filled room and listen to other people who seem to only want to hear themselves talk. I have my own problems I son;t need to hear other peoples'. Not trying to be selfish or incensitive but AA is just not for me, I don;t want to lean on other sick people I want to overcome my illness and take control of my thoughts. I AM strong enough to overcome this I just have not found the right tools yet, but I will take your suggestions. I have even tried CR through my church and it is better as far as positive fellowship and not as much the "Poor poor me" type stuff but still not effective for me.

THANKS!!

I'm sorry you are going through this. :frown: I'm actually surprised they banned you if they knew you were a heavy drinker.

I was just wondering if you are newly banded and if you have good restriction. The reason I ask is because I used to drink almost every night and once I got filled and finally had restriction (6 fills) I am not able to drink. The alcohol burns my stomach and I always throw up from it. I am probably too tight but since I am losing weight and had to give up drinking I am sticking it out!

I am newly banded. I have had one fill and have about .75 ccs in a 10 cc band. That is good to know, I am hoping the more fills and restriction I have will help with my choices.

That's really too bad that you don't feel like AA can help you. Have you tried other meetings? There are non smoking meetings. Some people don't like the meetings, but still get much benefit from having a sponsor.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
