1-Day Post Op-need encouragement

Recommended Posts

Heather, the breathing spirometer is actually pretty common to have to use following surgery. It can be uncomfortable, but does beat the alternative.

Feeling run down, tired and sore is absolutely to be expected, especially if you are only one day post-op. Everyone reacts differently to surgery and anesthesia. I know it took me a week to really feel like doing much of anything, and it was a good 2-3 weeks before I got to feeling 100% again. The main thing was the discomfort from the port. But, it will get better, and is very much worth it.

The important thing to remember is that now is the time for resting and healing. Exercise and losing weight will come in due time. It is important to follow your doctors orders regarding levels of activity, eating stages, etc.

Lastly, all, please remember to not compare your weight loss to others and get overly high expectations. It is important to remember that the band is desigend to work at its optimum when filled. It is also designed for us to lose a healthy 1-2 pounds per week. However, some may lose a little more, some may lose a little less. What is important is that you are on your way to a healthier you.

You know what, I need to apologize. I got so blinded by the 20 pounds statement that I lost sight of the real topic here. I'm sorry for that.

You do need to focus on the breathing. Take short walks, get up and move whenever you can. You need to keep working with your spirometer. It really does work to keep pneumonia away. Of course you should rest so your body can heal, but when you are awake you should do your breathing exercises as your doctor prescribed.

It'll get better! Hang in there!

love777pink:

Can you please tell me about the gallbladder surgery? I'm having mine out on 4/17. I was thinking it would be a piece of cake, like lap band.

Any info you can give on gallbladder surgery will be appreciated. Did you have gallbladder out laproscopically?

I had to use the same thing, everyone does. You're stomach is hurting, right? How would you like to have pneumonia and be coughing all the time. It exercises the lungs and keeps fluids from settling. Perfectly standard.

As for encouragement: I'm a week out and I can do everything I could do before. I can twist, bend, jump, run and laugh. The nurse told me it was a "nothing operation" and she was right... I had my gall bladder out and that was ten million times more painful.

Oh, yeah, and I lost 20 pounds this week.

Glad to hear you lost 20 pounds - maybe you won't be so full of yourself from now on!

You know Mommi, I was going to tell you to maybe lay off, but then I read through her other posts and saw what a silly little twit she seems to be.

hi ladies, let's redirect our attention away from love777 and towards assisting the original poster.

wickman - yes the first couple of days truly suck for some people. i was lucky and didnt have any gas pains, but i truly hated that breathing machine. BUT, i didnt want Fluid in my lungs, so i did it.

keep it up and remember that this time is for healing. just because someone says they lost x number of pounds in a week doesnt mean that a> they did or b> that you need to compare yourself to them.

best of luck to you.

Last night was the worst so far. The gas pains hit with a vengance! I do feel better this morning, though. Sipped on a CIB with added Unjury Protein Powder. I really don't have a "full" reeling, but I'm not hungry either. Lost 3 lbs since surgery and 7 on 3 days of preop Clear Liquids, so I'm counting 10# loss since Saturday!!!

Sue-

Don't worry about the GB surgery. It was about the same or a little easier than my band was. This poster tends to be a bit extreme, so I would not worry-you'll be fine!

Hang in there. Every hour you will start to feel better. The breathing is just a precaution. It is something that is very common for anyone with asthma or even just surgery. I have asthma and it is used to watch the lungs to be sure that they are not filling up with fluids. The breathing in and out will keep your lungs clear. The laying down can cause your lungs to clear up. This is a very common procedure with anyone that is laying around. Relax. Get up and start to walk around. That is the best thing for you to do. Works out all those drugs from the surgery. Keep your head up. It is so worth it when you start to see the scale drop and you are able to do things that you have not been able to do in a while, or ever.

I was banded 4/1 and also have to use that spirometer. It is actually harder to breath into that thing than I thought it would be. I have had the gas pains through my shoulder. I hope tomorrow will be better. This is only day 2

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
