HELP - Band May Have Completely Closed!!!

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone!

I haven't posted in a long time. I'm almost 2 years post op and have been doing just fine until recently. I've lost 42lbs and feel great. Had hoped to lose a little more but overall feel wonderful. I had my last fill about six months ago. I felt a little tight off and on. Like a few others here, I have begun to tighten over time. I had no idea that could happen. To date, I cannot digest anything - EVERYTHING comes back up. I've had no food/water for two days. As you can imagine, I am quite miserable. The reason I think my band is completely closed is because I took two antacid tablets last night around 11pm, hoping they would help with the reflux (which I have no history of). Around 4am, I woke up vomiting again. The antacid tablets were still in their chewed up form, they had never gone through my digestive track. It also explains why I feel nothing going into my pouch. I have vomited so much I really hurt. Will probably end up going to the emergency room this morning. Has anyone had anything similar occur?:confused2:

Definitely get to your doctor or the ER! I just went through this earlier this week (see my blog) and just a .25CC removal was enough to open me back up.

Good luck!!!!!

Yeah, totally go. they need to do a fluro on you it sounds like.. maybe a slip or erosion or something? If you haven't had a fill in 6 months could it be the fill causing this? that sounds weird. Please keep us updated on what the doctors say!

Hey All!

Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate the support. Just spent about 8 hours in the ER. I went to my HMO after hours care center first and they had an ambulance transport me to the ER due to the severity of my dehydration. They had a really difficult time finding a vein to administer the I.V. It took five sticks to finally get one. Once I was transported to the ER, they were not much help. They spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do with me. Did a barium (however you spell it) swallow and I was restricted about 99%. I was shocked the barium stuff didn't come back up. One thing I found out was the amount of vomiting I did over the last two days caused me to swell really badly. Currently, I'm open enough to drink liquid. I'm too scared to try solid food. May try some Soup later tonight. Long story short ... the ER had no one experienced with bariatric surgery. Thank God I was able to speak w/Dr. Martinez. He told me to tell them what to do - have the radiologist remove some of the fill under flouro. Unfortunately, they had no radiologist on staff. So, I didn't really get anything resolved. But, since some of the swelling has gone down I can at least drink something. So I spent all day lying in a room w/an I.V. connected to my arm. I felt a lot better getting some fluids, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. I still won't have anything resolved until next week but I feel a lot better. Again, thank you all. I am doing much better than I was when I first posted this morning.

Thank goodness you went to the ER and was able to get an I.V. You should probably only drink liquids since you are so swollen; food would probably only aggrevate you more. Take care and let us know how you are doing.

KINGSKID66,

Glad to hear you're okay. I guess I was lucky and called near midnight after I was too full and a surgeon met me 45 minutes away at their office after midnight. She was able to get the fill out before I had suffered all the dehydration etc... that you had. I've heard horror stories of hospitals not knowing how to deal with lap band ports etc... She did tell me one thing, if you're throwing up for two hours straight then it's a problem and never go past two! So now we all know right? Good luck to you and your health in the future, brandyII.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
