Dr. Miles or Dr. Schmitt patients

Dr. Miller coded the visits to where BCBS paid for them, I only had to pay the co-payment. I paid around $153.00 for the initial consultation and in about 3 weeks I received a check from BCBS reimbursing me for that visit! But to be honest, Aprilapple is correct. DON'T LOOSE A POUND! What you have to do is prove to BCBS that you need this surgery ~ and the more paper work you give them, the better. What got me approved so quickly is that I had over 10 years worth of Dr. documentation showing my weight fluctuations over the years and all of the medical issues I have gone through due to my weight. I was approved in about 2 weeks.

You let us know if you need anything ~ with all of us who have gone through the surgery and the approval process ~ you will have a WEALTH of information!!

Hey AG! How did you get BCBS to reimburse you for the initial consult? I could sure use that money! Did you file it yourself? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Venzwife! Your questions are never a problem!! That's what we are here for. I was full of them before surgery too so ask away.

I only had to pay for my copays during the 6 months. I'm sure the doctor coded it as a follow up for other problems I was having at the time too. I lost like 10 pounds during my 6 months but my BMI STILL is not under 40 so I didn't have a problem getting approved even with the loss. I don't figure you'll have a problem with getting approved as long as you follow the guidelines.

I honestly don't know. I think the dr's office filed it againist my insurance just to see if they would pay for some of it ~ it worked! I was shocked!

Alabamagirl1975, I didn't realize we had to have an EGD and Cardio test!?

I didn't have to get an EGD or Cardio...

I think those tests are dependant on your health situation. I only had to have the sleep study and bloodwork done by my pcp.

I had my seminar in August 2007, first appt with Dr. Miles on October 4, 2007 and had my surgery on May 6, 2008. So appr 9 months from start to finish.

=) Still hoping to be able to attend the meeting tomorrow. But I have sooo much to do for the wedding tomorrow afternoon, it is still iffy.

Hope everyone is doing well!

=)

Alabamagirl1975, I didn't realize we had to have an EGD and Cardio test!? I guess that a Schmitt/Miles requirement and not BCBS. How much does that cost? I would love to get all of this stuff taken care of during the 6mos diet, but if I don't get approved through BCBS, I'd hate to have to pay for all of these tests out of pocket.

Thank you ALL for your help! Y'all are wonderful & have answered so many of my questions! I hope I'm not bugging you if I have more down the road.

Not everyone does, just depends on any health issues you might have or even age. I had to go the heart doctor (who I LOVED by the way) and I suspect because I had taken Redux years ago, which was taken off the market due to heart damage.

Some people have to have a phsych evalutation, as well. I did not, but I think it's because I was very thorough on the application regarding my attempts at weight loss over my whole life. I think they're looking for eating disorders or other food related problems.

You will have to have a sleep study. I did all this in the first month or two of the process. Just get it over with so you won't have to worry. Just see the doctor monthly (and don't skip a month, or you have to start over). The first visit with your PCP doesn't count in the six, so it's really 7 months.

BCBS will pay, as long as you follow their guidelines, which are easy. It's all the Miles/Schmitt requirements that will drive you nuts! Although, to be honest I know a lot more about my health than I did!

Same here. I found out a great deal of issues I was having was related to my weight. I was diagnosed with MVP years ago, so that was why I had to have a cardio eval. - I also had to have the psych eval due to some meds i'm taking. Don't worry, I'm not violent or anything! Di is right, it just all depends on what your are experiencing or have in the past.

Thanks y'all! What a wealth of information you all are. :-)

savedbygrace, I'm glad to know that you were able to lose a little bit in the 6 mos diet and still be approved. I was REALLY worried about that. I have about 9-10 lbs leeway to play with and still be above the 40 BMI. I am MISERABLE right now, and didn't know if I would be able to maintain exactly at that mark without either gaining (which I didn't want to do), or losing, which I was scared of doing. I'm going to try and maintain, but if I lose 5-ish, it's good to know I will still be okay.

Can you go and have a sleep study done BEFORE your meeting with Dr. Miles/Schmitt? Do you tell them you are trying to get a lap band, or do you need to be referred from anyone? I'd be happy to go ahead and get that out of the way, but I want to make sure I don't do it the wrong way & have to do it over again. My husband has sleep apnea, and I would like to go to his doctor.

Thanks!!

I don't see any reason why that would be a problem. I didn't have a referral. I just called a local one and scheduled it. They had me fill out a long history form and I noted that I was needing it for surgery clearance. Upon filling out the forms, some of my honest answers were symptoms of sleep apenia so I did have to do the study. Insurance paid for it. I had to doctor note that he was fine with me having the surgery, got that note and faxed it in to Neoami. So ......... yes.. you can go ahead and get that part taken care of.

I'm going to the seminar, but not sure about the support meeting afterwards. I would love to stay, I'm going to be bringing my husband to the seminar, and I think he would be chewing through walls if he had to stay all the way through the support group meeting. How long do the support meeting typically last?

My husband went to the seminar with me and he ended up being intrested in it and said Dr. Miles had him about talked into getting it haha... We drive 2 hrs to get there so he didn't mind staying for the meeting.. plus you have to go to at least one before they will schedule the sugery.

I'm hoping he will want to stay. I would love for him to get the band too, but he's not ready yet (I don't think), and I don't think BCBS will cover his. His BMI is has been in a 35-39 range for the past 3-5 years, and he has sleep apnea, but I don't think it is severe enough. (stop breathing 50+ times an hour is I think what you are supposed to have, and his isn't that bad)

Poor thing has hypothyroidism too, which is being treated with synthroid, but I still think it makes him lose slower than he should when he tries.

I was so glad my husband went to the support group meeting. I had been through so much education on the process and it was great for him to learn so much about it as well. It really is so different from the seminar, you get to ask much more in depth questions, especially ask those who are already banded which is not only educational but inspirational.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
