HELP!!!!!!!!!! I am losing my long hair by the handful.

Recommended Posts

I just passed my 3 month postop date and my hair is coming out BADLY. I expected some loss but this is ridiculous. I take 2400 mg of fish oil daily, Biotin 5000 mcg daily, I just got some flax seed and organic quinoa to help get more Protein in daily. I get between 45 and 55 grams of Protein daily, doctor said I should get 60 to 70 grams when I was preparing for surgery. Could this "shortage" of protein be doing this???????? I am so close to cutting off my hair because of this. It goes 3/4 down my back but it is EVERYWHERE and I am a) concerned and :success1: tired of it.

P.S. I have recently started a new job and am stressed right now learning it, but the Hair loss began before this.

Please, any advice, comments, whatever would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

This happens to some and not to others even the doctors don't know why - some say protein (lack of ) some say it's the surgery (anethiesa sp)

I don't think anyone really knows - I had a gf who just did medifast diet and not banded and she lost tons of hair too. Just get your protein in - quit stressing (easy for me to say  i know) - I have read where some do cut their hair and it does help a little .

All I can really tell you is that it does grow back.

Hi,

I am 13 months out from being banded. After the three month mark a lot of my hair also fell out in clumps for a couple of months.I was really worried.

It will be ok. Do not worry, it does eventually stop. My hair is back to normal now and growing back thicker than ever.

It will pass.

My doctor said it was because of the stress from surgery and the rapid weight loss... your body is in shock mode. I lost a considerable amount of hair... and it wsn't due to loss of Protein. It will get better. The BEST advice I heard and used was to wash my hair daily. If you do some research on this site, you will see that someone even suggests a Shampoo. Actually washing my hair daily did help.

I lost a lot of hair after my surgery. I also waisted a lot of money on Nioxin and all kinds of Vitamins. I was just hoping something would work. My Dr told me it just takes time. And he was right. It lasted for a few months. And although my hair did get pretty thin it was not noticable to anyone but me. So please try not to waste to much time freaking out. It really will stop and grow back soon. Mine lasted for a couple months and then just stopped. Good luck to you.

I just ask my nutritionist the 20th of March about the Hair loss thing and I told her of all the things I heard of and she said it is a protien thing. I am due for my banding Apr. 9th, and she wants me to get at least 65-80 grams per day with 3 meals and 2 Snacks everyday. Now of course the first 2 wks will be liquids, but she said she still wants me to get into this habbit right off so I will be fully ready when I can get on solids. So with my protien drinks and with my 4 flintsone vitiamins (different times daily) I should be fine as far as my hair goes, so you should talk to your nutritionist soon. Good Luck.

Starting about month 3-4 I started losing handfuls of hair. I am now 10 months out and still losing a little, and my hair has really thinned out. The loss is slowing down but hasn't stopped. My dermatologist recommended using head and shoulders and said that it was dermatitis caused by shock to the body, etc. He suggested rotatijng Head and Shoulder regular with the H&S high intensity Shampoo. That seemed to slow it down some. I've probably lost more than 25% of my hair. As long as it stops and grows back at SOME point I will be satisfied.

Hi freebird,

It might not hurt to trim it a little bit. A good trimming always makes your hair a little bouncier and not so heavy. It could be just breaking off at and the ends, but you could be growing a decent amount of hair. The anesthesia does a number on your hair also. Between the anesthesia and the weight loss, it raises heck with our hair.

Try a good condition and give it a little more time.

I am almost a year out and I still go thru phases of losing my hair, then it slows down a bit. I find the weeks the scale goes down a lot, I will lose more hair - unfortunately!

It should slow down.

Stress definitely does a number on your hair also. When my mom passed away I lost a lot of hair. The doc said it would take about 3 months for my body to get over the trauma to my system, and that is exactly what happened. It does get better.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
