GNC asked me & I dont know....

Recommended Posts

Do banders need to take Biotin? The GNC guy was an ex RN who specialized in post op recovery mainly for RNY patients. Yesterday I bought the chromium picolinate and Isopure RTD & some vanilla cake flavored Protein mix which is the most delish protein I have EVER tried & he said I should be taking niotin to prevent Hair loss after surgery. I thought plenty of protein would prevent hair loss...do I really need biotin too? Lord knows I have the thinnest hair in the world (ok maybe not in the world..but compared to when I was younger.....)& I shed like a dog from hypothyroid & I cant afford to lose anymore!

The chromium picolinate definately helps curb the hunger, I love it!

Was there something else in addition to it that I thought I remembered seeing somewhere on here?

Since losing 4 lbs over the weekend from the flu, I started a "modified" pre op diet early since my appetite was diminished from vomiting, I wanted to keep it that way, not start eating again just to start starving myself in 2 weeks when I start my real pre op 10 day.

So far so good, I am not hungry at all...

yesterday I had carnation instant Breakfast, a vanilla cake Protein Shake, and a ceasar side salad from wendys that I only ate 1/2 of & tons of fruit 2o Water.< /p>

today so far, carnation instant brkfst, another shake for snack, bought a chef salad from publix at lunch but havent been hungry enough to touch it yet. & water of course!

Hopefully it will stay this easy till April 11th!!

I have lost 5 lbs since I got sick on Saturday night!

Nothin' like a good flu to jump start the weight loss! I would be interested in anything that would deter Hair loss too. Mine is also thin already. All I know is folic acid and Protein. I'd like to know if there is anything else I can take prior to surgery.

I did a lot of Protein during my pre-op and still take in 80-100 gms daily. So far, I havent had any Hair loss that I can notice. The Protein Shakes are my choice too, just to make sure I get as much as needed.

My dr. never mentioned Boitin, but I have seen it posted on other sites.

Biotin is a great supplement to prevent Hair loss. I started taking it 2months ago because I started shedding. My mom has a natural healing book that has a natural remedy for almost everything and it said it helps. I would say that it would be a great addition to what you are already doing.

I started looking around reading on it after reading your post.. Here is what I found

Benefits of Biotin

Biotin benefits include its crucial role in energy metabolism. Biotin acts as a coenzyme and carries carbon dioxide. It also plays a role in fat synthesis, amino acid metabolism and glycogen synthesis.

It is suggested that biotin benefits people with diabetes by helping to break down carbohydrates and lower blood sugar levels. It is possible that biotin benefits hair by keeping it shiny and helping it maintain color.

Weight loss may be another biotin benefit, as the Vitamin is essential in the conversion of carbohydrates, fats and Proteins to energy.

Symptoms of biotin deficiency are Hair loss, a red scaly rash, depression, lethargy, and numbness and tingling in extremities.

Biotin side effects should not occur when it is taken within recommended amounts. If biotin side effects do occur, they can be reduced or eliminated by lowering the dosage or taking biotin with food.

Sounds like it plays a strong role in weight loss. I guess you would have to determine if you are taking in enough with just what you consume or if you think you would need the supplement. Maybe take it during the healing process?

The hair part though it sounds like if you have a biotin deficiency this supplement will help you from losing your hair which is the same with Protein.

I might consider using the biotin in a small dose along with my required Protein just to be sure that I am receiving all the nutrition.

I don't know if it actually does anything, I take "High Potency Biotin 5000MCG". My surgeon said they recommend it to RNY patients and told me it couldn't hurt. It's also suppose to help fingernails.

I stopped for a long time, but my nails have been unusually brittle lately, so I started taking it again.

just talked to my surgeons office. They say Biotin is an added help to preventing Hair loss especially if you have trouble getting in all your Protein. May as well get some, they say its safe & couldnt hurt anything b4 or after surgery.

I knew that the chromium picolinate was curbing my hunger, by Dr's office also said it decreases carb cravings!! WooHooo I need that!!!!!!!!!!

Counting,

I recommend asking your doctor himself about the Chromium Picolinate, especially if you have any cardiac or hypertension issues. It carries a risk of cardiac arrhythmias.

You can get Biotin at Walmart. All those supplements and Vitamins are in alphabetical order.

I have been taking it all along, along with tons of Protein, and I am still losing my hair. I will keep taking it though, because like everyone says, it sure can't hurt.

Yes, GNC: Vitamins, supplements, Minerals, Herbs, Sports Nutrition, Diet & Energy and more carries it.

Also Vitamins: Alternative Health supplements & Vitamin Nutrition Supplements - VitaminShoppe.com carries it.

I haven't checked Walmart yet, but Super Walmarts usually have a fantastic Vitamin aisle.

I'm going to get some tomorrow. I have very long thick straight hair, and I'm starting to really shed and it's driving me crazy. I hope it works, though I'm guessing it will take a month or so to begin seeing any results.

Hi all,

I started losing alot of hair. My dr. suggested Biotin. I also was tested for b-12 deficiencies which I now have so I take a shot each month. My Hair loss has really slowed down with the combination of biotin and b-12.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
