What is a good Post Op shake?

Recommended Posts

I am having my band done next Wed. My mom had this done about 2 years ago and said the shake she had to drink made her sick all the time. She could not stand the taste of any of them. What was your favorite?

I've tried all kinds and they all gave me serious gastric problems. So far the only one I can drink is All the Whey-for bariatric/lap band. It has no fat, no carbs, sweetened with Stevia, gluten free and lactose free. I love the strawberry shortcake and orange creamsicle!!!

I'm picky and whiney, and I hate all the Protein shakes.

So here's what I could tolerate.. The Slimfast chocolate shakes, very very cold.

And then a concoction I came up with, that worked for me since I had to do the shakes.

Expresso shake...

-Make ahead: Take an ice cube tray, make some extremely strong coffee or use expresso (I used expresso, the stronger the taste, the better..masks the Protein ick), freeze the coffee in the ice cube trays ahead of time.

-3-5 ice cubes from above

- 1 scoop vanilla Protein powder (any brand, they're all equal IMO)

-1 packet of artificial sweetener -or however many you want (I actually prefer sweet-n-low in my coffee, so that is what I used)

Blend well till it makes a coffee smoothie.

I make a strawberry yogurt Protein Shake. 1 cup ff plain yogurt, 1 cup unsweetened frozen strawberries, 1 scoop unflavored whey Protein powdered, 2-3 packets Equal, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Blend in a blender until smooth. Add a few extra frozen strawberries if you want to eat it with a spoon. I put it in large insulated cup and it stays cold until it's gone.

For a quick, at any store shakes, I like Ensure (or the generic form of it) in strawberry. In 8 ox it delivers 13g of Protein. The calories are high but if you are like me and still in full liquid stage, 350 cals is not a huge setback.

I love seeing everyone's suggestions. The recipes are awesome. I may have to try tat Espresso one.

Lifeway lowfat Kefir has 174 calories and 14 grams of Protein per cup. It's a drinkable yogurt and tastes very good. Most supermarkets carry it and it tastes very good.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
