What foods are protein?

I read everywhere that after the band you should eat the Protein first but does anyone know any websites were I can find out which particular foods are protein? I mean I only know 2 and I think there probably wrong - Egg whites and chicken. I eat salads and vegetables with dinner almost everynight so I know I have at least something healthy but which foods are protein? Thanks

Any type of meat, usually fish and chicken are the most tolerable after banding and lowest in fat. tuna, canned chicken, toufu...eggs, Beans, cheese & milk are some other examples of high Protein foods. Peanut Butter is high in Protein, but also high in fat...have to watch it.

I'm surprised you haven't been given sheets and sheets of info on your post band diet??? Use this site all you can or simply type in "protein" and you should get all kinds o results on the iternet. Seems like someone didn't do their job to inform you of what you need to know to be successful.

Dead muscle tissue, as unappealing as that sounds. Fish, chicken, turkey, pork...

eggs, especially the whites.

Beans and bean products such as tofu.

Dairy products generally contain decent amounts of Protein.

Sea plants (nori, spirulina, etc.) have very large amounts of Protein.< /p>

Most nuts.

Etc.

Well I haven't actually seen my surgeon yet, I still need a referral which is taking forrrrever but once I see him my surgery will probably within a month or so of seeing him, I've never really known what foods are high in protein just the foods that are high in fat, so thanks to you and everyone else that replied, I'll have to look it up now, can't live on chicken and eggwhites forever after surgery lol (although I could easily do that =P)

Sarah.R ... I don't think most Australian docs push the Protein thing like the docs do here in the USA.

At least, the "Aussies" (if that knickname is correct and appropriate?) I've read on here eat a more "balanced" diet than a protein-heavy one. So don't fret; your doc will give you guidelines.

Well, as you've probably noticed, your doctor hasnt told you this, because its not generally the way they encourage you to do it in Australia, so dont worry too much about it. Here, I have to stress that its not the complete opposite, not a "low Protein diet" its just that all food groups are considered important and there's justs not the belief that loads of Protein offers any real advantage, and that there's more benefit in eating a larger portion of your diet as fresh fruit and vegies.

However, a bit more protein and a bit less carbs is a good thing when you're trying to lose and I dont think you'll find any surgeon arguing if you replace your white carbs (white bread, Cookies, cakes, white rice and pasta) with protein foods! Just as long as you're not sacrificing your fruit and veg for protein.

There's protein in almost anything, but animal foods are a major source - meat, eggs and dairy. However, protein comes nicely packaged with a LOT of saturated fat, so a high protein diet can be extremely artery clogging too - you have to choose lean meats and low fat dairy. Stay far away from lunch/deli meats - salami, ham, processed foods like hot dogs and sausage are just plain no good for you, there's really nothing good about them. cheese, well, its so delicious, sigh, especially good cheeses, but its not good in large amounts, unless you're eating cottage cheese, and well, I'd rather the package it comes in, lol.

If you have a couple of cups worth of skim milk per day - on Cereal, in tea and coffee and you include a dedicated protein source with each meal - like tuna with your lunchtime salad and some sort of meat, fish, poultry for dinner, you'll get enough protein.

Beans and legumes like chick peas, lentils and such are a great source too and its a really great idea to include a couple of vegetarian meals like this a week to up your vegetable intake and keep your meat intake down.

Most people unless they eat really tiny amounts will get enough protein without even trying. Read all the labels in your pantry and fridge and you'll see there's protein everywhere. You really dont need to worry about Protein shakes, but you can of course, if you like them.

Are you saying that you actually went for surgery and the doctors found yr liver was too thick and did not do the surgery? Is it because u did not follow your two weeks of liquids before surgery.

The thread starter hasn't been to the surgeons yet as shes waiting for a referral.

Shirley, PM her and I'm sure she'd be happy to tell you about it. She's wonderful at sharing her experiences and trying to help others. Her story is one of hard lessons learned and triumph! RM is great.

Sarah, As far as Protein goes, veggies and fruits also have Protein. Granted not tons of it but it's there. If you haven't seen your surgeon yet, don't get too wrapped up about it. You'll get the info you need from him. And if not, then ask for it.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
