Help please, need advice from other pcosers

Recommended Posts

My nightmare is coming true. I was banded on 01/25/2008, lost 10 lbs pre-op and 10 lbs week after surgery. I have not lost a pound since. Dr. said I was eating too calories, so I upped them and still nothing. I kow from reading your posts you can be succuessful with the band and PCOS. So for those out there with PCOS that have been successful, if you had to give me 3 tips for success, what would they be (low carb, weights vs cardio, take medication, do not take medication, how many calories a day). I know everyone's different, but advice would be much appreciated. I will do whatever it takes.

I wouldn't consider myself successful yet, but I am pleased with my weight loss so far. Have you had a fill yet? It's very common to stop losing weight once that swelling goes down, at least until you get a fill. Let's see.......3 tips would be.........

1. Try to keep it low carb. You don't have to do the Atkins Diet or anything, just eat lean Proteins first, then move to a non-starchy vegetable, then if there is room, eat a piece of fruit or something.

2. Definitely do cardio. I don't exercise like I should and have been pretty lucky so far, but I can tell you right now, my luck is starting to run out. Exercise is going to be key for me to continue losing. It would serve you well to get in the habit now.

3. If you do weights, only do them every other day. Your muscles need time to rest. My doctor said that was very important.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey! Even though this may be a slower process for us PCOS'ers, it is definitely possible, so don't give up. Good luck to you.

Oh, I take Actos Metformin and I am pretty sure has helped with my weight loss. Have you been taking any meds?

Oh, and one more thing, I try to keep my calories around 800, sometimes 1000.

Thank you so much for the help. I was eating 550-600 calories, then upped them to 1000-1200 per the doctor. I take avandamet, I got off Metformin after not being able to tolerate it. I think I may try to get back on it. I'm just going to keep controlling the things I can control and have faith it will happen. Again, thanks for the support.

Just an FYI for those of you who might be going through the same thing I am, I went to the doctor yesterday, weighed, and low and behold I've lost 5 lbs!!! I guess upping my calories did work. I suppose this journey is going to teach me a critical virtue: Patience!!!

Hi :) I'm not banded yet, but the most critical thing for me with my insulin resistance is the exercise. That is why I'm getting banded. The doctors tell you to exercise but being so heavy it's hard to get to the intensity where it helps. I find walking the dog briskly for 30 min a day has helped my numbers. Also, eating at regularly scheduled times to avoid a drop in your blood sugar will help too. Check with your doc to see what the right timing is for you.

Banded08 - I have PCOS too and feel like my weight loss has been really slow, especially when I see some of the stats around here! One thing you mentioned was about not being able to tolerate Metformin; have you tried different types? I didn't handle the regular generic very well, then tried Glumetza which was much better. Now since I've been banded I've been on Riomet, which is the liquid form--it's been GREAT for me, and I can really notice a big difference in my PCOS symptoms, more so than with the other meds. Anyway, just thought I'd mention that! Our hormones can really throw a wrench in our best weight loss efforts; we can use all the help we can get!

It sure can. If you put your body into starvation, and 550-600 calories will definitely do that, you will stop losing weight. So increasing calories will help increase your metabolism. I was told that 800-1100 is the amount of calories we need to lose the fastest, I'm sure everyone is a little different.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
