Recommended Posts

well, this past tuesday i got my band! i'm recovering nicely, but did anybody else have intense shoulder pain? i'v been having major pains right on the tops of my shoulders, i know that its built up gas, and my doctor gave me a perscription for it, but the perscriptions since ran out, does anybody else know of anything you can do to help with the pain?

any advice would be great!

thanx again,

Congrats on getting your band and good recovery!

Yes, I had shoulder pain because of the gas...I used Gas-X and a heating pad (or hot shower) and it helped ease it. Good luck!

Welcome to Bandland!!!

The only way my shoulder pain was relieved was through walking... gas-x didnt really help me, and I didnt try a heating pad... only walked! When I felt that sharp pain start up, I took a walk down my street - not to far, but just enough to feel those gas bubbles work themselves downward.

That was really the only discomfort I had during the entire recovery phase.

Good luck.

Shoulder pain is from the gas they use in the sugery. I found doing arm circles and/ or getting a massage really helped move the gas along. It does get better. Welcome to bandland from a fellow canadian

The LEFT shoulder pain is from where the band is placed relative to a major nerve in the body. It settles down after a while...but it can still feel irritated years later, if you overeat or get "a plug," or irritate the area near the stoma.

I didn't get shoulder pain after surgery but I do get it after a fill. Who knows why? But I use "ICY HOT PATCH" for the back. I put it on my shoulder and after a while the pain goes away. Good luck and welcome to Band land!!!! :)

Last night I used a heating pad first to warm the area, and then my husband massaged my shoulder for about 10 minutes and it felt sooooooooooooooo much better. I guess it takes a long time for the gas pains to really say good bye to us. I am going on 4 weeks post surgery and still have the shoulder pain every day, especially at night.

The shoulder pain isn't really anything to do with your shoulder! It's what's known as referred pain - sort of like getting a pain in your fingers if you bash your elbow. When your diaphragm - the big muscle at the bottom of your ribs - gets irritated it triggers a nerve pain in your left shoulder. That would explain why Terri gets it after a fill. Her band gets inflated and irritates her diaphragm for a while.

Almost everyone seems to get the shoulder pain. I found exercise helped the most. Sitting around definitely made it worse. With me it only lasted five days post op though.

Hope that explains!

Heating pad will help, and also try to walk as much as you can so that it can come out.. Good luck to you I hope your feeling better real soon..

they sell the disposable heating pads called Thermacare I believe. The heat lasts for over 8 hours. I bought a pack of 3 of those and wore them up walking around all day for several days and it really helped...I was able to get the heat and the movement.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
