Getting in the game

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone:

I have been reading post for awhile and now getting active. I just figured out the ticker and ready to get on with the journey. I apperciate all those who have experienced what is in store for me. I look forward to and appreciate all your help and advice.

I am a 59 year old Vocational College Instructor and have had a weight problem most of my life. Now, it is getting worse and my health is showing the consequences.

I have been to the inital consultation with the surgeon, Dr. Kappa, in Kingsport, Tn and am now in the process of getting the necessary documents, tests, and consults. I have Cigna insurance. Any advice and encouragement will be greatly appreciated!

Congrats on beginning the process! I also started in December 2007 and just completed the process a week ago. I am scheduled to be band in two weeks. The insurance process was not bad because the team of staff work with you to make sure everything is documented properly and submitted the forms. It does take two to three months to do everything, but what a blessing when its all over. I wish you the best in your new journey you are about to begin.

Hi Cathy, Welcome. I wish you luck with your pre-op process and then with your banded journey. I,too, am waiting for my band. I expect to be banded the end of May or early June if I am approved by my insurance company. They require a six month medically supervised diet. It's been going OK and actually I am thankful for the six mo. prep time. It's given me a chance to acclimate. I am also thankful for this forum. I have had a lot of questions answered. I look forward to seeing your posts in the future.

Wow, I have made so much progress this week toward my Quest for the band! I completed the psyc exam, it was un-nerving... I am glad that is done, but he did approve me, after saying I was too trusting... lol, it could have been worse. That took 4 hours and I was exausted. I don't know why it had to be so long. A written test and then an hour of interview. I also saw my GP and got a lot of assurance there, plus the documentation of the 6 months doc lead dieting, my insurance requires. I pick up the records from the OB/GYN and the sleep apnea docs also. All I have left is a group support meeting next Tuesday and the individual nutrionist meeting on Thursday and the gallbladder scan that should be scheduled next week. Then I will be ready to submit to the insurance! I hope that will give me the go ahead! I am aiming toward the end of April when my school has a semester break, that will be an ideal time!

Good luck Karen and thanks for the support sisterc and lilo. I will look for you all on here! I will need all the support I can get and will look forward to being a support to others!

Cathy, Karen, Lilo, Sister...WELCOME! Big changes are in store for you all...and it will be like nothing else you've experienced. I know all the pre-banding tests seem overwhelming, but I am glad they treat this so seriously. It will speak to each of your successes. Heaven forbid this becomes a vanity surgery, done jsut for the asking! The time before is for wrapping your head around the process, the time post banding is for healing. The journey is full of self disscovery...and that's a good thing. All the self awareness brings you closer to your goals!

Good luck, we're proud of you for taking control!

I also look forward to taking this journey with you, Cathy. Sounds like our surgeries won't be too far apart from each other (if I get approved). I am ready to get the band and start the next phase....we'll talk soon. The other Karen

Hey Ladies

You are going to love your band when you get them... It is the best thing that you can do for yourself - as we are all in the 50+ gang and we finally realize that if we want to live a better and longer life that we need to get this fat off of us..

The band is a great tool to help us acheive this goals and with the help of our other tool (our brains) we will finally get it that this is a lifetime lifestyle change in our eating habits - that we must execrise and make healthy food choices to be healthy.

I feel 10 yrs young - look like a normal person - feel 1 million times better about me - I am so proud of the work that I have done to accomplish this goal - and imho I have done the work not the band - yes it has helpped but I am the one who has made good food choices and gets my butt to the gym. I am the one who says no to the candy - fried foods - by band is my interior motivator ...

Good luck to you all and welcome to lbt

Thanks for the support, Janet. I have a question for you. It's off the subject. After losing your weight, how do you feel about the condition of your skin...do you have sagging? or are you one of the lucky ones?

Lilo

I have dog ear boobs (but truly I did when I was heavier i had ugly boobs with the fat I went to 42 D - I was orginally a 34 a or b and after the birth of my son 37 yrs ago I had saggy boobs - - I am now a 36 D - but totally deflated)

My tummy has a little apron but not too bad - I wear Lipo in a box - inner thighs not pretty and I have some bat wings - It's all about your genes and how long you have been overweight. No amount of exercise is going to fix saggy skin. I gotta say that I am pretty lucky - I have some sag but not as bad as others - I am not a beauty nake - but who sees me naked

I dislike my arms but what I have read the scar from that surgery is uglier than the wings - I don't know if I want to go thru the pain of having surgery - in my clothes I look pretty good - I would rather spend the p.s. $$$ on my face - and I am lucky there too not too bad - I have hooded eyes and little bags under the eyes - but had this 80 lbs ago too - My face is what is seen and my body might not be perfect - but I feel so much better and who cares really and at our age we aren't going to have the body of a 20 yr old.

I like said - no perfect body here - but over all I gotta say it looks a hell of a lot better than 80 lbs ago - saggy skin ain't gonna kill you but the fat will - that's the way I look at it..

I like this group. Let's see... do I have everyone? There are two Karens, and I am Cathy. I am excited about this process and trying to avoid the negative people I encounter about this. That has kept me from telling a lot of people close to me. I don't want them to discourage me, one sister keeps saying how scared she is for me. I know she wants the best for me, but also is a little jealous that she doesn't have insurance to pay. Another sister is considering surgery but has chosen to use another Doctor and complete bypass. Funny how sisters can be. I want the band because, I will need constant support and don't like the idea that my stomach has been completlely changed. My regular physician says this is not at invasive as the bypass. Has anyone else had this kind of "support"?

I have so many questions, but for now I need to concentrate on the "homework" my nutritionist gave me. I have to complete a day's menu for the 1st 3 phases of diets. Phase 1 -clear liquids, Phase 2 fluids with Liquid Protein, Phase 3 mushie food. We have to take these into a one-on-one appointment with her and also take a quiz to be approved for surgery. I guess everyone has their own requirements, but most seem to be pretty much the same.

I hope you are all doing well and I hope to chat more soon!

Cathy - Your doc sounds like mine - I had homework too - there are so many people here who don't know what to eat or do after they they have surgery - It sounds like you will have all your facts so that you will be able to succeed at this and not be lost as what needs to be done once you are banded.

I have 1 older sister - she was happy for me - she doesn't have a weight problem - My little bro was ok too.. I guess they figured I was a big girl and I could make my own decisions. My support has been my Lucky#7 gang -

We have the greatest group and my 50+ ladies - these are the 2 thread that I have posted to religiously since I joined in May..

Bypass vs lapbands - for me and per my doc it depend on many issues - if you are a big sweet eater - then bypass may be a better option as you don't absorb your calories and with the band you do and candy/sweet are easly eaten with the band - For me it was a Portion Control issue - I didn't eat tons of junk just too much good home cooked food and no exercise.

Welll gotta get back to work - ttyl....

Count me in ladies! I have my last of seven "hoop jumping" appointments this Thurdsay. Afterwards, everything will be submitted to BCBS for approval. I suspect surgery will be in April. A woman I work with is doing this as well, and her info goes in Monday for approval, so I'm anxious to find out how long this process takes. I'm very excited and so glad to have this forum. I have been lurking for a while and have been absorbing all this information. I feel like I'm going to have tons of new friends for support. I have been overweight all my life, obese most of my adult life and morbidly obese for the last 10 years or so. I cannot wait to be healthy. I have a wonderful new husband and plan to have many many years with him.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
