Necessity for Gallbladder removal

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to ask this question, but I recently went to my surgeon to schedule my surgery and mentioned that I have gallstones. I was told by one of the nurses during the pre-surgery classes I took that if the surgeon felt it necessary, he could do the laparoscopic cholecystectomy during the lapband surgery. However, my surgeon told me to have this procedure before the lapband surgery and after about 3 weeks to have the lapband surgery. He said that they could do both procedures, if necessary, if the patient was having the bariatric bypass surgery. Now, i have to wait until May to have my lapband surgery. This is due to schedule issues on both of our parts.

Has anyone heard of this need to have 2 separate surgeries?

:wink2:I had both done at the same time... They found stones and said i needed it out. and actually it was in bad shape aparently. i was told if i did it seperate that most likely i would need the gall bladder out shortly later. so we did in one shot. nothing that the surgeons say surprise me anymore. i have learned so much about my body recently that i never knew. hope that helps.

Thanks Michelle. They really didn't give me the option. I guess I wonder what would have happened if I didn't say anything,. Would they have done both or would they have just removed my gallbladder and when I woke up would have realized i would not have had the band. That would have been really depressing. BTW, hoiw do i put that weight loss ticker on my posts? Thanks again for your reply.

Hi,

My surgeon (in NJ) didn't give me the option of doing them together either. Plus I had to have a pulmonary "OK" which is actually a sleep study before he'll do the GB removal. Now the sleep center says results won't be back for 2 to 3 weeks ..... then another 2 weeks until I can get a GB surgery date. I'm wondering how crucial it is for the GB to come out if I can wait this long????

Has anyone ever heard of needing a sleep study before gallbladder removal?

Thanks

Thanks so much for sharing. I am scheduled to have both on Dec 4th, and My doctor said there may be a chance that I can't do both once he gets in there due to possible bile leakage. I will be soooo freakin mad if I wake up after surger without a band!!!! Thanks for the hope! Pray it goes as well for me too. Congrats on the weight loss too!

Best of luck to you. I am sure you are in good hands and that all of this will be worth it. I am now down 70 pounds and had the lap band on 5/19/08. Now I just have to figure out how to update my weight loss ticker. :-)

I've been told I need the gall bladder out next week and in 2-3 weeks- the band goes in. I'm freaking out a bit about having to go under 2 times this month and getting my belly pumped full of gas twice. I'm a bit nervous about everything happening so quickly.

Well in my area surgeon's split up everything now just b/c insurance will pay them more for 2 separate procedures. If they do both at once the insurance will bundle it and they will get a discounted rate instead.

I go for my Lap Band next Friday and then in a few weeks I have to go back to have a partial hysterectomy. I hate having to have 2 surgeries in a row but my Lap Band surgeon doesn't do hysterectomies and my Ob/Gyn doesn't do Lap Band so I'm stuck.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
