Pain at left rib cage area

Recommended Posts

I am getting the same pain for the last few days. I also have pain in my left shoulder. This pain is right under my left breast and under my rib cage. I find that if I try to stretch out that it helps but when I sit back up it hurts. I am concerned about it because it seems to be hurting more and more. I have noticed that the pain is more prevalent in the evening. It is very uncomfortable. I am seeing my Dr. on Wednesday and am going to discuss it with him... Has anyone else learned anything from their Dr?

Cindy

Ok, this probably has NOTHING to do with yours, BUT I also had pain there. they did many many test. I was finally diagnosed with a herniated disc in my thoracic area, which has nerves coming around to right below my rib cage. It is strange, but it can affect that area. Like i said, It is PROBABLY not your problem, but others might read this and recognize it. also, it can make pain on either side.

I get a weird pain too! Starting on my right side under my ribs. It sounds crazy but I feel like my ribs are trying to explode out of my body! I emailed my dr. and he said it was probably a reaction to eating ham. I have still had the pain for about 6 weeks and have not eaten ham since. I went to my family dr. and he scheduled an ultrasound to check my gallbladder. My blood pressure was 100/53. Sounds low to me, but they didn't say anything. I also feel a pain between my chest like right on the breast bone. it feels like I slept in a strange position, but I haven't. So strange. I don't want it to be gallbladder issues. The thought of a surgeon messing around near my band makes me uncomfortable!:confused2:

Well i started having that pain after my first fill. That particular fill was very hard, the doctor was a bit rough and i ended up all bruised. I continued having that pain at the end of my left ribcage, it was really hard to breathe at some point.

When i went to the doctor to get it checked, he said that my port had migrated to under the ribcage and was irritating the pleura, only way to get it fixed was by having a small surgery to place the port back in place. After 2 years the port hasn't moved and i feel no pain.

I am 6 weeks post op and my pain has been relentless for all but 4 days. It is just above my port area, my lower rib cage is extremely tender and it goes right through to my back. My surgeon thinks that one of the 3 large sutures that is holding the port in place must be irritating a nerve and hopefully it will settle down. i see him again this week and I know I can't live like this for much longer. If you are still uncomfortable after 6 months, I am concerned for myself too!.

You could be having a reflux problem. Don't let your doctor find the easy way out - of course it wasn't the ham. He just didn't want to believe you really were uncomfortable. Try some OTC liquid Maalox and see if that helps, if so, then you probably are having reflux.

So it turns out I just tore a muscel by my ribs from coughing so hard when I had bronchitis, it's been two months now and it is almost totally better. I hope everyone gets thier issues figured out.

When I went for a fill at the beginning of March the pain had went away and I forgot to ask my doctor.

Thanks for the update Ghostbuster. After my fill in March, I got a cold and was coughing really bad and the "pain" came back . It seems to have subsided. If I eat meat and don't chew the heck out of it I notice that uncomfortable feeling. Every day is a learning experiece with the band.

My first post - have a lot to report - I've had the left side pain (under left rib area) since my banding on 2/26. When I have the left rib area or under the left breast pain, I also have pain radiating to my lower back. However, since my first fill on April 2, 2008 the rib pain area has subsided substantially. My pain is caused from overeating, or eating food that causes me too much gas. I've always been "gassy", but after being banded I could blow the state away! I wish I would have read up a little more about it. I am in a professional setting 5 days a week - I just take MANY bathroom breaks a day. But, if I watch my diet and eat bland foods, I make it work...I eat fish for supper every night and that helps too. When I asked the LNP about the pain, she said that it was caused by the healing from the surgery, swelling, and the body adjusting to all the "stuff" inserted. I know that when she filled me, she really worked the port around. I don't know if this can happen, but it seems that the port has moved just enough after my first fill to subside the pain. Or, I think it's like she said, the swelling has finally concluded, or, maybe it's the 25 pds. I've lost. (Before surgery I was a 44DD and I just bought a new bra last week 42D so that surely must make a difference also). They've also tried me on different anti-acid medications and the plain ole Tagament that I used to take in the 70's seems to control the acid in the stomach better than any of the new pills they wanted me to take. Also, if I wouldn't walk twice a day, the pains and gas would be unbearable. Walking has saved me! Unfortunately after this first fill I am hungry again and want to eat everything. I'm going to schedule my 2nd fill today. Beginning weight 235 - today's weight 210 - final weight will be 150

Congratulations on your success Thinkinhealthy! Thanks for posting your experience. I am so with you on the "gassy" problem since surgery. I'll keep an eye on the gassy foods if the pain comes back. Good tip on the walking.

It's nice we can come to this board and read about other peoples experience. Good luck and continued success.

Warning: This probably won't help at all lol!

I have had the same feeling exactly where you are. Usually can feel it more when I sit at teh computer for a long time. I have bad posture.

Anyways, been tested for everything and the only thing they can come up with is reflux. Even though the pain isn't where it should be the doctor says it travels for some people.

I was reluctant to beleive him, by I've had ultrsounds, cat scans, colonscopy, endoscopy, and many xrays. Only thin that shows is signs of reflux. He started me on Zegerid and it almost went away now.

I do agree with you Snuffy65 that my rib and back pain is more apparent the more computer work I do. I came up with something that has helped me if I'm stuck typing at the computer - every hour I take just 5 minutes and walk the long hallway of the building I work at - back & forth - back & forth. No, it doesn't get done every hr. Sometimes not even once a day, but most days I get in at least one or two 5 minute walks in the a.m., and one or two 5 minute walks in the p.m. It helps so much - I think it gets the gas moving! I set a timer on my desktop that reminds me to 'GET UP AND MOVE'. Also on my lunch break I walk 30 minutes and then come back and sip on Soup at my desk for a half hr. I put it in a cup and nobody even knows that I'm eating my lunch - where I work they don't care, but for some people, it might be a big deal if you eat at your desk. Just some thoughts! Thanks everyone!

Lynne,

I would go to your doctor and do a barium test to make sure everything is ok. Did you have a fill recently? You may need to get some of your fill taken out and go on liquids for a week or so.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
