Optifast

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Thank god for this BB. I have been reading vigilantly the Optifast recipes and thank goodness I did. I had a vanilla and choc milkshake on day 1 yesterday and just managed to get them down without gagging too much :biggrin2:. Last night I put some melted diet jelly crystals in the vanilla which made it more palatable. Today I put some peppermint essence in the choc...and yummy! That horrible watery choc taste is gone. I also whip up the shake then put it in the freezer for an hour and then whip it up again, and it's a bit like having a slurpee..

I am on day 2 and although I felt hungry last night after netball (I had a small salad prior to playing) I am doing quite well. I will try a dessert tonight and probably a bar for breaky in the morning.

Thanks to all those who have contributed to the recipes for opti.

9 days and counting! Oh and I have already lost 1.8kg from 2 weeks ago when I was weighed..That's gotta make a girl happy. :smile2:

Good luck Peek!!! The Optifast stage is hard, but it not only helps with surgery and recovery but it also gives you a head start in your weight loss. Its nice to go into surgery already having lost a bit, it helps with morale, well it did for me anyway.

I am not sure about anyone ele, but for the first 5 days on Optifast I felt rotten, tired, headachy etc....But that seemed to pass after about a week, so keep it up.

I was banded jan 16th and after about one week I felt perfectly fine, so I am sure all will be well.

I did Optifast a couple of years ago and after 5 weeks on it, I was quite ill. Thank goodness I only have to do it for 2 weeks this time!

Well done on starting this phase of your journey. So close, I bet you can almost 'smell' it. lol.

hi all, I went to pre-op consult with surgeon today - I have been on Optifast for 1 week and I have lost 5 kilos.:scared2:

My surgery is Monday 18th February and the surgeon is very pleased. I must also admit that i didn't stick to it absolutely - but when i did pick it was on a piece of carrot or extra salad or broccoli so it was that I went way off.

All the best with ur operation - I am sure u will be fine.

regards

M:thumbup:

Thanks guys. I am coping well with opti, breaking out into the bars and the deserts today. I put a little too much peppermint essence in the mouse tonight, my lips are still tingling and I can feel the burn in my throat still  That will teach me! I know I can do this easily, but I too am feeling a little headachy and a little blue, and I do have conjunctivitis in one eye so that might be contributing to how I feel

Cherry_blue your weight loss is sensational. 12kg in under one month is just awesome. I hope that I can kick start this whole process by losing beteen 8-10 kg during the 10 day opti but I won't be disappointed if I dont. I know that it will come off later anyway. :wink2:

Sunwyse yes I can smell it, but I don't want to bask in the aroma just yet. I don't want to get overexcited! :Dancing_chief:

Striver good luck with yours. It will be interesting to compare our recoveries since we are having our bands so close together..

I know we will all be fine, it's getting over this pre-op phase where we have to be very vigilant with what we eat. Green tea is my best friend right now!

hang in there.........

It is all worth it. I couldn't take the drinks but quite liked that bars. however vowed that I would never have another one after surgery... However I now quite like them and often look forward to having one at Breakfast. My favourite is the Cappuccino one.

I lost 11 kilos in my 3 weeks on Optifast.< /p>

I agree that the Optifast is really hard and I too had a headache and felt lousy for the first couple of days. I never want to see another diet shake again and hopefully with the band in place I'll never have too. I never got used to them I'm afraid.

Anyway, I hope the time passes quickly for you. I know when you are in the middle of it it seems like an eternity, but soon enough you will be in the home stretch.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I need it as I am struggling at the moment. Never have I felt so hungry or sick and weak in my life. I have 4 days to go and although I will survive it, I don't look forward to any opti meals. I wish I could source the cuppachino flavour because it sounds nice.

I have tried everything in my drinks, and it does make it easier to get down. Last thursday I was having a berry crunch bar, and every time I held it close to my mouth, I just wanted to vomit! And they are nice too. I think I am over it...but only 4 days to go.

I too was over Opti fast but it's a small price to pay I kept telling my self, also felt angry that I had created my situation by over eating in the first place!

I was banded on the 13th Feb( 6 days ago) and am doing fine however am well and truly over only fluids but really I'm not hungry and you'd be surprised how inventive one can be!!!

I really wish you well and remember this journey is for the rest of our lives a new and slim person lives within us if we give it everything this once and for all, I am so sick of being FAT.

So bless you , WE can do IT!!!!:(

Good luck Kylie for the 22nd.

I was glad I didn't have to do the preop Optifast, but I've been on it the last 2 weeks and I'm getting a bit over it. I'm not ravenously hungry, just sick of having the same thing.

I can't start mushies till I see the doctor on Thursday. Oh hurry up Thursday!

Hear Hear Janice. Wise words indeed. Actually now that I am getting closer, the opti is not that bad. I haven't added as much Water, added a little Decaf coffee and voila...a really nice shake!

Rubenesque, keep it up. I think I will be similar on the liquids stage, but I can have anything that you can suck through a straw. Sustagen and Up and Go liquid breakfasts are going to be my friend! And Thursday is now tomorrow..not long for you either.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
