What to eat after a fill and for how long

Recommended Posts

I know that there is a special scehdule to follow after a fill but really have not been told by surgeon what it is.

I want to know what do I eat after a fill and for how long, ie...liquids for a week? 2nd week mushies? 3rd week start integrating meat and solids?

Does anyone know???

Thanks for your help.

Lots of Dr differ on this. My Dr says two days full liquids, then two days soft foods. I then add normal food, but I chew well and take tiny bites until I know what foods my new restriction might tolerate.

I do 2 days of liquids (shakes/soups), then back on to solids slowly as I can handle. Each Dr is different, mine prefers I work back into solid meals by day 3/4 after a fill (he's not much a fan of liquid meals).

Follow your doc's instructions.

But mine said hot cocoa for the rest of the day. But the next day is normal.

Good luck.

My doctor makes me do Clear Liquids for three days. That sucks big time!!! I can't believe your doctor didn't say anything about what you should do...the reason you need to be careful after a fill is that you can have swelling and if you eat food that is at all hard you are at greater risk for slippage. I think my doctor is extreme and I personally haven't been able to do clear liquids for the whole three days but I usually do them for one day then move to soft foods - cottage cheese, refried Beans, etc. Once I start eating I stay careful for a few days. You can tell if you are swollen - I didn't feel that until my third fill. It usually subsides by day four or five.

My doctor also said 2 days liquids (day 1 clear, day 2 full) then 2 days mushies, on day 5 solids. If when I graduate to the next stage it doesn't stay down...I have to start the process over again. I would definitely ask your doctor what he or she reccommends.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
