favorite foods you can no longer eat

Recommended Posts

The best way I can think of to talk about this subject is to say that, with a band, food is no longer your best friend. When I was getting ready for surgery, i felt like my best friend was dying when I thought about eating post-band. Now I just feel like we've grown apart and she just doesn't mean that much to me anymore.

I can't eat bready things, including Pasta, bread, pizza crust, soft tacos. If I were not eating those things through willpower it would bother the heck out of me. However, those are foods that now have not been kind to me, so I don't miss them.

Aren't we silly? We plan surgery to stop us from overeating, then feel bad that we won't be able to overeat!

I can eat just about anything I could pre-op..EXCEPT mac & cheese.< /p>

Strange right? It's not dry or anything..I've tried twice since Christmas (after my 2nd fill) and COULD NOT DO IT! It gets stuck like you wouldn't believe!

Even stranger, I can eat any bread, chicken, or steak I want and they don't get stuck and I have gotten three fills. I feel I have good restriction so I don't eat too much and if I eat until I'm full -it hurts- so that is out!

Trust me you will learn to enjoy other foods. I am loving my band. I can no longer eat Bagels but I still take a little bite off the kids! It hurts but I still taste it. I tase the burgers too but I never eat a whole one. And ya me too I eat mostly the toppings off the pizza.< /p>

I tried small amounts of rice, pastas, bread, etc after I went to solids. None of them worked well. I have taken out anything white or made with flour or sugar from my diet. I thought I would miss breads, pastas, rice, in my diet, but I don't. I haven't had sugar just because I didn't want to. I have had a couple of tiny bits of a candy bar, which I ended up spitting out because it was just to sweet. That has never happened before! I eat of lots of vegtables and Proteins and am very happy with my new life :D

Would do it again in a second!!!!

As for the foods, the only thing I really can't/won't eat any more is McDonalds french fries! Can eat onion rings, tator tots (carefully) and french fries from other places but not McD's. pizza, Subway, soda, Pasta and all that other stuff you mentioned....no problem. Now, just because I say I eat them doesn't mean I go crazy! I can go to McD's, get a side salad and a double cheeseburger off the dollar menu. What I do is throw away the top bun, cut it in half and use the rest of the bun as kind of a holder for the meat. As I'm eating I tear away most of what's left of the bread......making it to where I really only eat about a fourth of the entire bun.....does that make sense? It allows me to have a sandwich with the kids and not have to eat a burger with a fork! pizza is kind of the same thing, will eat a bite or two, very carefully off the point and then eat the topping off the rest of that slice. Once in a while I even go for the topping on the second peice. Pasta's are not a problem at all. What I do have a little problem with is things like cube steak, or leftover or too dry chicken.

I've lost 90 pounds in one year (if the sweets had any trouble going down that number would be a little higher!!), I feel great and am enjoying life again! My family and I went to Worlds of fun and rode rollercoasters this summer, the kids are in 4-H and the County hosted a Laser tag get together last weekend (yes I ran around like a fool!) , going to a roller rink in March....and guess what.....I'm skating!

Don't focus on the food or what you're afraid you're going to miss, you'll be so busy living life again that it will be worth it! Good luck!!

i've lived in kc for 5 1/2 yrs and never been to worlds of fun. i look forward to being able to ride a coaster again!

Mustlose, I felt like you at first--that perhaps I would have to give up a lot of the foods I absolutely love--but I've found that many of my fears were for nothing!

If you are slow and careful--chewing, chewing, chewing, you can eat many many things--I feared losing pizza, but now I have a slice now and then and you know what, it's no big deal--in fact, I don't really even want it much any more!

The one thing I HAVE found that I can no longer do is cocktail sauce--it just burns the whole way down.

But everyone is different and you WILL adjust, believe me--life is so-o-o good with the Band! :D

LOL I grew up in KC I miss worlds of fun and Oceans of fun. We used to hang out their all the time when I was younger.

Of course it is not as great as Holiday World in Santa Clause Indiana...(close to me) So I cope....Maybe this summer I can ride a ride again....wow that would be something.

All the things that I can't eat are mostly things that I shouldn't be eating, the other day I had a craving for Mcdonald's fries. I can assure you that never again will I ever had craving for that again, It felt like I was having a heart attack with a couple of fries. chicken also bothers me sometimes, mostly the breasts. I'm fine w/bread although I try to stay away, and I drink diet soda, although I'm supposed to drink that flat

I can no longer eat red meat of any kind. bread is a problem most of the time, as well as chicken. Oddly enough, I dont miss them at all. Instead I've found I really enjoy fish (especially tilapia), and yogurt. Both were foods i rarely ate pre-band.

I also can still enjoy pizza, and Pasta, but much much smaller amounts.

It took me 7 months to try Steak and I did it at a really good steak house so i knew it was a good moist cut of meat. It was fine. But i dont know if I would trust myself with it anywhere else LOL

I also enjoy fish , My husband does A LOT Of off shore fishing during the summer so we have plenty of fish and I enjoy that as well. All he has to do is catch one tuna and im set for the YEAR ! He catchs Sushi Grade Tuna so its REALLY good .

I have learned to like baked fish , before i ate a lot of fried fish .

I guess it varies for each person, but I am still able to eat Cereal and Pasta. I think the biggest difference is that it doesn't take much of anything to make me feel full. So it's not like you are starving yourself. I have been able to eat most things in moderation. The thing to remember is that you want to lose the weight, so in the end you'll need to make better choices in what you eat.

I love my band and I am still learning as I go how it all works!

My husband had this surgery and has lost weight but is now gaining some back. My questian is , is it true when he tells me he can't eat veggies and food that is actually good for him? But he eats all the junk food he wants.

This is just my guess but Im guessing he means that junk food and food that is bad for him goes down "easier" than foods that might be healthier for him .

I really doubt foods that are good for him he can not eat ANYTHING that is good for him ! Softer , foods which a lot of junk foods are slide through the stoma easier and go down easier , wont get stuck as easy .BUT makes it possible to gain weight as well.

Does that make sense ?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
