help! 5 days preop and I got a cold...

Recommended Posts

So my surgery is January 23 and now I have a cold and I am freaking out!! At my appt with the anaesthesiologist on Tuesday (my surgeon has all his patients meet with him) I mentioned I thought I might be getting a cold and he told me that as long as I don't get a bad cough it should be fine but to keep my surgeon posted. Well I am officially sick now and I haven't started coughing yet (just stuffy nose and itchy ears/throat), but my DF is just getting over a cold that had him coughing up a storm. I am so worried that I may have to postpone my surgery, which yah I know I've waited this long - no big deal right - but I also know my surgeon is away for quite a bit of February.

Did anyone else have a cold? I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance. I can't take Vitamins since I'm in that "week before surgery no vitamins or anything" stage. I have been drinking lots of Orange juice though.

I am going to call my doctor this morning and see what they have to say.

I just stated with the cough yesterda and am worried about getting canceld too. I think it is allergies. Luckily my doc says I can still take my allergy meds and possible cold meds. I am going to load up on OJ and rest this weeked and try to beat this cough. I have 6 days to get rid of it.

Hope you feel better!!!

I had what I thought was the start of a cold prior to my surgery (turned out to be allergies from the christmas tree!), but I told my pre op nurse I wasnt sure what it was, and she only asked me if I'd have a fever in the last week, and since I had not she wasnt concerned. So it sounds like as long as you don't have an infection of some sort, you should be fine for the surgery.

Best of luck!

Tina

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
