On prozac and psych eval

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have my psych eval 2/8 and am wondering if I should get off my prozac before then. I suffer from depression but mostly because my weight. I'm really nervous about the psych eval. Any help, advice, hints, etc... would be greatly appreciated!

I just had my evalutation it really was noting to be nervous about.. I would stay on your meds.. it is perfectly normal to be depressed over our weight.. My doc asked questions like: Have you ever tried to diet before? were you able to lose weight? were you able to keep it off.. have you ever been depressed? do you feel like harming yourself have you ever felt like harming yourself or others? at the end of the session she said he was recommending the surgery. Now all I have left is my sleep study..

I stayed on the antidepressants...it's OK to be on them. I had to see the psyche twice. The first time around he was concerned that I may have binge eating issues and maybe the band would not be right for me. I was asked to do more research, read the book Overcoming Binge Eating and attend a post surgical group. I did all, started a food journal and just got my approval on Tues evening.

Good luck with your appt.

Christine

Please do not abrubtly stop taking your meds. Patients that are ready to go off depression meds should be slowly weaned off them.

Don't worry about the evaluation. Just answer the questions and don't add too much more info than just what was asked.

I am also on Prozac and suffer from depression (I take 60 mg/day and it's the ONLY thing that keeps me sane) Anyway, I was VERY nervous too, but it was no problem at all. The psychiatrist is basically checking to make sure you're mentally stable for surgery, that you don't have any eating disorders or potential eating disorders. I felt like she was trying to get to the root of my overeating so it wouldn't be a problem post-surgery. She encouraged me to eat balanced meals and exercise. No matter what, I wouldn't stop my medications before surgery or after until directed by a doctor.... don't worry about the evaluation, they want you to take care of your mental health as well.

Same here. Been on Prozac and went through the 400 question psych eval test and it was no big deal. You'll be fine. Don't skip meds as that can cause other issues.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
