What to wear during recovery?

Recommended Posts

I know I need tops that open down the front so I don't have to pull anything over my head following BL/BA, and I want clothes that are cozy enough to lounge or even sleep in, but nice enough for guests (who better stay away for the first week!) So, I'm thinking of picking up a couple of inexpensive track suits and/or PJs. My question is what size? Do I get the size I wear now, or go up a size to allow for swelling and the compression garmets (also getting lower body lift)?

Any other suggestions for clothes for the post-surgical healing period?

Tami

I have just been out buying for my op and I settled on jog pant in the size I am now (made from lovely soft material mmmmm) but they have a slight drawstring waist for if he truly works miracles!!

On the top half I have got soft vest tops, and a couple of soft jog suit tops to go with them.

I have also invested in some new lounge suit PJ's so that if I really cant be bothered to get dressed they arent obvious bedtime wear!

HTH

Oh and the way that I justified the jog bottoms to myself was that when I have had the surgery I will be looking so darn fine that I will keep up with the exercise so I will need them!

Just a suggestion, but what about knit dresses? They're fine for company, and terribly comfortable for lounging. I don't know the exact name of what I'm thinking of, but it's basically a knit dress with an empire waist and ties in the back. This is what I wore post-banding and post-cholocystectomy, and it was perfect. I few days post-op I could get into track suits (and wore them the rest of the time), but for the first few days I couldn't wear them because the waist band hit exactly where I had two rows of staples.

BTW, the dresses won't go to waste once they're too big like the track suits. I still have mine, now many sizes too big, and they're perfect for Sunday morning house cleaning.

the only reason i thought pants is cause i get SOOOO incredibly cold now with the weight loss. and i remember several weeks after lap banding i was FREEZING even more than now, i guess from being put under... ???

I've had my robe on the last 24 hours, makes going to the potty and checking my drains much easier. The only button up the front pj's I found were flannel, well at 58, you don't want anything that hot, LOL.

I took my robe to wear home after the surgey too.

Anxious to see what TT is going to look like and the boobies look a little small, YIKES!

Those dresses are either smock dresses or "A" line dress.

Yah I freeze all the time too. Used to always be the hot one (uh, perhaps "overheated" one is more accurate). Now, when I'm lounging at home, no matter what I have on, I'm also wearing a super thick bathrobe, and if I'm sitting I have a throw on my legs. I hate lounging in pants - same reason I hate sleeping in something with sleeves -- I feel like if I move, it binds me up. The one exception is knot gauchos. Those are great to lounge in because they feel like you're not wearing anything. But they definitely aren't warm.

Tami-Take it from someone who had a LBL 4 weeks ago, you don't need to go up a size for the swelling or the compression garment. I'm down 2 jean sizes even with the swelling and all my pre-op clothes are falling off. Not that I'm complaining mind you, but thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth. Good Luck with your surgery.

angel,

thanks for your input! my old navy pants came in and they fit fine now, but have a full drawstring. i did get 1 or 2 pair 1 size smaller. do you think i'll have issues with the drawstring around my waist with the TT incision so low?

thanks!!

all else fails, i can wear my DH's pants (he weighs maybe 160 at 6'2") ... :wink2: (size large in mens ... LMAO - yeah, me... in my DH's pants ... heh, not that way you pervs :pray2:)

LJM-I am wearing pj's with a drawstring and have no problems and my incision goes up around my hip bones. The incision is pretty well protected by my compression garment.

angelnurse,

thanks! where did you get your garment? my surgeon only gives a binder and i cant imagine that giving me enough support. i guess im just used to wearing 'sucker-inners' that i'd feel lost without a complete garment.

LJM-My doc gave me 2 garments, it was covered in his fees. I looked them up online and I'll give you the address, but they r very pricey. The website is : Design Veronique - Compression Garments

The ones that I have are #855 Zippered Full-Body Girdle. He usually gives you one zippered and one pull-up, but one of the gals from my support group had the LBL done last April and she said that it was too hard to use the pull-up one. I asked my doc if I could have 2 of the zippered and I'd be willing to pay the difference, he gave me the 2 and didn't charge me any extra. I would think that you'd need more than just a "binder" after your surgery, but I'm not a doctor. Hope this helps.

Yes, it feels kind of weird without them. After I take a shower, I wear them while showering, I feel loose and wobbley without it. I dry off as fast as I can then get a dry one on. They aren't too uncomfortable except the area where the zipper is, it kind of presses into your skin. You get used to them real quick.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
