Arlene, so sorry to hear DH didn't have the surgery. Didn't the do any preop bloodwork before now to catch something like this. Here's hoping it's something minor and easily treated. Maybe due to the circumstances he can get squeezed on on the schedule soon.

Oh, yes, the doctor called his office and questioned why he had not received the results before today. He told them he wanted to know if it was his office or the hospital. He has moved to a different hospital. Somebody's head is going to roll. Now, we are probably going to get stuck with a hospital bill.....at least they will try to stick it to us. DH's mother had several blood disorders, and one was clotting. The doctor said that is hereditary. I feel sure we will get some answers from the blood doctor, and he will get the surgery . So, now we are going out to eat chicken fajitas. I have a cold and not much of an appetite, but DH is starving. I will keep y'all updated.

Hi Everyone,

I guess you can call me the ultimate lurker because I rarely post but I see the post quite often.

Yesterday my doctor informed me that I was losing the weight on my own as my band is unfilled. I have never had a fill since my surgery on January 16, 2009.

I eat a cup of food 3X a day without Snacks. I add my fruits to my Protein Drink.< /p>

What food measurement are you currently eating? When I started feeling hungry my nutritionist suggested I go from a quarter of a cup to a half of a cup of food 3x a day. Once you get through the healing stage your doc might suggest you to eat more fibrous foods which will keep you full longer.

Now that I am past five weeks post lapband I am on a 1200 calorie diet with regular food, no restrictions. This will change once I begin to have fills. My goal is to try to exceed 70 grams of Protein a day which does help with ones appetite. But I am still having appetite issues. My first fill will be on the 29th of June. Hopefully this will help.

After being stuck for over a month, I hit my first goal this morning!!!

I have finally hit the 170's!!!! 179.5 this morning! A normal BMI for me is 169 but my doc said he'd be happy with anything under 180. Yes I am going for the 169, but this is so cool!!

You are in what is called bandster hell the time between surgery and your 1st fill. You say you are hungry - but are you full after eating your prescriped meal.

IMHO my band didn't take away my hunger issues - I will be physically full after a meal and still feel like I want to eat more - I can't but my body wants more food.. I do stay full longer on a smaller amount of food - but my head hunger issues manifest themselves into me thinking I'm still hungry.

I had a salad for lunch today - I am physically full - but right now I want to eat - I would give my right arm for those donuts in the lunch room - but I know that - it's my head talking not my stomach :0)

Gotta say that it takes time to understand what your new full feeling is all about - after a meal (1 cup) I would sit and continplate my stomach - I still wanted more food - but i realized that it was my addiction wanting to be fed as when I really sat and thought about it I was physicall full..

Somtimes, a fill WILL help, to a certain degree.....usually, a limited degree, though.

This is why it is really, really important prior to having ANY kind of WLS to do the homework and find out exactly what kind of eating disorder/Metabolic/absorbtion issue you might have. In many circumstances, the band is NOT the right choice, particularly when continuous and nagging hunger is an issue. In these situations the Sleeve or the Bypass may be a better solution, because components of those surgeries address the hunger issues quite specifically.

I'm not necessarily suggesting that you got the wrong surgery, but I think it's important for people who have not gotten their surgery yet, and who are reading these posts to help them in their decision making process, be aware that the various types of WLS address different circumstances and issues....it's not a matter of simply choosing whatever surgery you prefer, it's about choosing the surgery that is right for YOU.

I don't qualify for gastric bypass since my BMI was only 37.5. I am about 75 pounds overweight but have serious issues with diabetes. As the time passes since my surgery I feel more hunger and don't feel any symptoms of feeling full. My concern is that the fill will not address these issues.

I'm sorry that the band didn't work out for you. What can you tell me about the tests that you are referring to. I have had no testing.

Thanks for your insight. I think I need to go to see the nurse. I was doing well and losing a little weight when I was on the liquid and soft diet. Now the feelings that I have are very much the same as before I had the surgery.

Like I said you are in Bandster hell - It will all depend on your doctor if he is agressive or not with his fills.

My 1st fill felt right away - but was gone in 2 weeks - the 2nd fill didn't settle in til about 2 weeks out and have been at my sweet spot ever since.

Don't give up yep - your band is a tool and that tool isn't going to work properly until it's been filled and it may take more that 1 or 2 tuneups to get you to your sweet spot.

In the meantime - just eat healthy and if you are diabetic you are staying away from carb/staches and sweets - if you are hungry eat extra veggies - that's what I did..

It's not specific tests, as in Medical tests. It's more counseling with psychotherapists that have a very specific expertise and experience in eating disorders and bariatrics.

This is one of the "missing links" in the whole bariatric surgery experience, I think, and it's not being addressed nearly to the degree that it should be. There are people who need RESTRICTIVE procedures (band, Sleeve), and there are those who need MALABSORBTIVE procedures, such as the Bypass. And, of course, there are those for whom no surgery will work on any long term basis, because of a combination of issues.

It takes a skilled therapist or Dr to be able to help a patient look closely at their personal history of weight gain/loss, eating habits, etc, and come to a conclusion about the right surgery for them....IF surgery is really even necessary. This, I think, is one of the reasons that there is such a high failure rate for all of the WLS procedures....people get the wrong kind of surgery for their particular eating disorder/personality/physiology. There ARE those people for whom ANY WLS will work, because they are willing to DO the work required to MAKE it a success. But I think those people are kind of rare.

I firmly believe that if Drs spent more time working with their patients prior to surgery, and required some fairly long-term committment of Counseling with the right kind of Therapist, the entire experience of WLS would have a much higher level of success and satisfaction. As it stands now, MOST Drs/insurance only require a simple single-session interview with a Mental Health professional, and that is usually just a rubber-stamp process.

I've only had 2 fills and I am just fine and almost 2 yrs out..

As to focusing on surgery you prefer opposed to the surgery that's right for you??? It's up to the individual to determine what's right for them...

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
