Hi all, Im going to have my second fill tomorrow, I hope it cuts down my appetite. My first fill my appetiite was down for about 11 days and then I become starving. The good thing is I finally have more energy. A three years ago I was in a car accident broke leg and arm, and unable to keep up with the house work. As soon as I would start to feel well was time for another surgery. I've been ok for a while now but over whelmed with where to start with the clutter. I am now pleased to say that I am getting through the mess. Even using a few power tools. Huray for me.

Can any one tell me how to move my ticker in case I'm down at tomorrow's appointment. I don't remember having to enter a pin to create it.

Esther

I all am so glad to have found this discussion board, am a young 64 was banded on Feb. 11th and loving it but also just getting to know my way around with the band, have had no major problems and no fills as of yet. Live in Washington State and if I could hurry mother nature up with Spring I would certainly do it, cold and cloudy here and still have some snow on the ground. YUK..... Also not very computer savey!!!!

Good luck to all

Welcome, Dawnie!

I was banded last summer, have since turned 64. I also live in WA state, but we spend the winter in southern CA. Welcome to this site. Also check out the 60+ site. Where did you have your surgery? Mine was in Seattle at Virginia Mason. Don't tell me about snow on the ground!!! We are headed home in two weeks and I'm afraid it's still going to be too cold up there for me!!! I'm spoiled!

Welcome Dawnie, Don't feel bad about the weather. Our snow is melting but we still have lots of it. I don't know where it's all going to go. I'm too tight right now and debating over to have some removed or try to baby it along and see if it will loosen up with a little time. Such a fickle little gadget we have in us!

I have been lurking around this forum for several months and have never posted before. I am so glad to see other people in my age group talking about thier experiences. I am 60 and it seems that many of the people on this forum are much younger. If this option had been available when I was younger I probably would have taken this path and lived a much happier life. I have been overweight most of my life, but was fairly fit and able to do most things I wasnted to do. My weight was more of a self-esteem issue than it was a physical limitation. Now I find I have arthritis in my knees so bad I have to walk with a cane. I have sleep apnea, high blood pressure and am pre-diabetic. My husband is 70 and I feel like I am dragging him down because he has slowed his life style down to match mine. (which at the moment is at a snail pace) I don't want to go and do things like I used to because I just feel so old and tired. My insurance company refuses to even discuss WLS, so I am going to be self pay. I can't afford the surgery, so my parents (both in their 90's) have offered to pay for the surgery for me. Thier comment was that they probably won't live much longer and the money will be mine anyway and there is nothing they would rather spend their money on than seeing me be healthy. I have some large guilt issues in talking the money as I feel that at my age I should be able to pay my own way, but I know this is the only way I will be able to afford the surgery. I feel like I should be taking care of them instead of vice-versa. My surgeon has told me that due to my age the losing will probably be slower and that I probably won't be able to lose all of the weight but I can make my life better. I haven't told many people that I am considering the surgery because I just feel that at this stage of my life I should have been able to control my eating and health issues. I am also fearful that I will fail and look like an idiot. My surgery is scheduled for June 27th after school is out for the summer, so I will have a long stretch off work to give me a running start on success.

I am just wondering what thought process you all went trhough to justify taking the risks at our age. I am thinking the risk of all the weight related complications are probably greater than the surgery risks. Thanks for letting me vent and I look forward to following this group and finding support from people who are in it for the health issues and not to fit into a barbie doll dress.:cursing:

I haven't posted in a while I guess I figure if I'm not losing what right do I have to give advice. But I'm back and looking for a new resolve.

hi Kalai,

Your question about motivation actually helped me. I remember why I did this. (Or at least one of the why's) Last August I was seeing a new Dr for first time. I told him I was thinking about Lap band surgery and his answer was - "You don't need that - ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS DIET" Yeah right - Like I had never thought of that before. Anyway, I had already researched it so I was so mad I went home and set up app't for surgery (self pay so went to MX) Had surgery on 9/5/07 I have lost a total of 63 pounds (27 prior to surg and it took about 8 months.)

I'm glad I did this and I will get back on the ball. When you don't have good restriction it becomes difficult but I know from reading on here that restriction will come. In fact I do have more than I did. Good Luck and Go for it!!!! :cursing:

Absolutely right...

the risks of staying fat are far greater than the risks of the surgery! No need to feel guilty...wonderful of your folks to offer to pay. That's great and their reasoning makes perfect sense.

This site is the greatest place you can come for support.. Don't "lurk", jump in and join in. I was banded last July at the age of 63 1/2. I've lost over 70 lb. It's slow but steady. And you have to work at it... find a way to exercise even with the physical limitations. I've been doing Water aerobics all winter because we were snowbirding in our RV in southern CA. Now that we're headed home (WA state), I will be looking for other ways to exercise that won't tax my knees. Also seeing an orthopedic surgeon later this month to see what can be done about the knees.

My Two Cents.... you have to stick to the rules.. whatever your surgeon's guidlines are, and you have to find a way to exercise even if it's just sitting in your chair lifting 2-3 lb weights or cans of Soup or whatever.... move, move, move! I read that even the simple act of standing to your feet will release an enzyme that burns calories!

Best of luck to you!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
